Jenny Smedley
Hi , I feel guilty as I look at the forum often but don't actually say anything unless I have a problem but please help: I cleaned out my eglu cube & think it has red mite- I did a good clean , sprayed ,powdered etc. I checked my girls & although I couldn't see anything obvious powdered them anyway. About 5 mins after getting in to my warm house my head started itching so i combed through with an old nit comb ( I haven't ever seen a head louse or nit so wouldn't recognise them either) - TO MY HORROR SEVERAL LIVE CREEPY CRAWLYS FELL OUT !! I've nit combed my hair thoroughly, showered & washed my hair twice & put all my clothes into the washing machine. My questions are: Can red mite transfer to humans, cats , dogs or parrots as I have all three? Will they bite as they do with chickens? How do I get rid of them- is what I've done enough ? What's the best way to treat the eglu cube & my chickens ? How do they infect a cube & chickens- where do they come from? Many thanks , Jenny
Egluntyne
Everything you could ever want to know about red mite **here** Interesting suggestion re coca cola. Xeno 200 *not licensed for use on poultry in UK will sort them out.

Ain't Nobody Here
I've never seen red mite but aren't they minute and hard to see? Could it be lice you've seen? They are very easy to see albeit kind of clear in colour. Edit: did they look like this?
Jenny Smedley
Hi , I had to use my glasses to see them so they must be small - they were more round & dk rust, blackish red coloured. That help any ? Thanks for taking the time to reply - I've lost count of the number of times I've "nit combed" my hair this evening!! Thankfully not found anything! I'm wondering about wearing a bath hat next time I clean the eglu!!! Jenny
Ain't Nobody Here
Oh dear, the requirement for glasses and the blackish red colour does sound like red mite .

Ain't Nobody Here
I have just noticed where you live . I'm not surprised you're itching . (I thought you might have changed it specially, so had to Google Bishops Itchington to check if it was a real place .) I was also nosing at your signature - I see you very sadly lost all your girls in April . I take it you have new girls now? You need to update your signature . Jenny Smedley
Hi , I've ordered some Xeno 200 so hope that it with all the other measures will sort it out. Re the signature - I would if I could work out how to! I'm not very computer- lit . You'd be amazed how long it took me to post my message earlier! ..lay a little egg for me
I would imagine you need to be careful about them transferring to the parrot particularly.
atsw
Re the signature - I would if I could work out how to! I'm not very computer- lit. Go to the top of the page. Look just under the green Omlet banner for "FAQ Search Members User Control Panel". Click on "User Control Panel". Screen will change. Look to the left hand side for a list of items, click on "Profile". Screen will change again. Look at the left again. See an item titled "Edit Signature" and click it. Make the relevant changes and prees the "Submit" button at the bottom (you might want to hit "Preview" first to check it's as you want, then press "Submit". That should do it. Alfred
they certainly can spread to people - I read a study which said that out of 22 people referred to psychiatrists for delusional problem as they thought they had mites (and their doctors thought they were mad), 18 of them actually did have red mite!!! they live in the furiture/carpets during the day and come out at night so often you don't see them on you but just feel itchy at night. i think you can get the council to steam clean the house and that will get rid of them, if the worst should happen. they can be spread by wild birds. Good luck!!
Guest
There was an episode of "how clean is your house" a while back where the son had moved out because of getting bitten in bed. When the council came out they found that a bird had fallen down the chimney, died, and had bought mites with it. They crawled out through a vent in the chimney breast at night and bit this poor lad to bits! I bet we're all itching now! Louise
Jenny Smedley
Hi everyone , Thanks for all the advice - I think I may just move house ! Having done a serious "blitz" of both birds & cube - what is the life cycle of the red mite - how many weeks later should I repeat the serious blitz to catch any hatching eggs or whatever? pbfhpunk
Jenny I live in Offchurch and we get DE from Southam County Stores on the Industrial estate in Southam. when we clean the cube we sprinkle that on the base and coat the end of the roosting bars with it. The store is a really good place, we get all our pellets and bedding form there. Helen

Gamebird
Hi everyone , Thanks for all the advice - I think I may just move house ! Having done a serious "blitz" of both birds & cube - what is the life cycle of the red mite - how many weeks later should I repeat the serious blitz to catch any hatching eggs or whatever? Jenny I believe the life cycle is 7 days so you would need to 'blitz' the Cube at least every 6 days or so. Poultry Shield is quite effective in getting rid of red mite. Thorough spray the entire Cube getting into every nook and cranny and repeat this every 6 days for about 3 weeks.
