FORENSICA
OK, I admit, I am terribly grumpy now I did not get to bed till late last night and knew that I had a few hours to sleep. However, these got cut even shorter since at 6:30 sharp, our chooks decided to make a racket and woke me up! I let their Eglu door open all the time, and have hardly any problem. However, it would not occur to me that they will decide to sqwak so early in winter. I am starting to suspect that chickens are not really suitable for such build up areas as London, where there is loads of light from people's houses, lampposts and noise from trains and planes. Also, we are really surrounded by flats and so what I hear probably another 10 neighbors hear too Anyway, I think it is only one of them who is making the noise, I believe. Now here is the question, if I re-home that one, will any of my other girls take over? I love them dearly and I had to put a real fight to keep them during summer when they were up terribly early, but this is unbearable. I am going to have a baby soon, and the idea of me getting up for feeding and then be woken up by chooks just haunts me. We have tried all the usual tricks (tarpaulin over eglu, closing them for night, letting them open over night, ....) but these worked only for a while and I am seriously tired now. So please, should I get rid of one or all of them at one go?
moochoo
I think there will always be a noisy one. I live in a built up area but my closest neighbours don't mind the noise and I have some fantasticly noisy girls. It really is up to you. If you don't like the noise they make then perhaps you should find them a home that doesn't mind. I think it's a lot to expect to get rid of one girl and hope the others are quiet. You are probably right, as I suspected. Somehow I can not get rid of the feeling that if they wake me up, they must wake up other people around and I do not want to be responsible for that. I should suggest to hubby that we have to buy a new house in a countryside and have chooks there then I was lucky today, since hubby was away, because if they woke him up, it would have been an argument in our normally harmonious household
Hendy
I'm afraid the only option, if you can't move, may be to get rid of them all. It's really not on to wake up your neighbours and as someone who has only recently escaped the baby stage you're darn right you're not going to want to be woken up. Sorry. quickcluck
If you think that light is the problem have you thought of closing the door and covering the eglu with something dark, it may help to keep them quite a little longer.......... Janty
I never leave the eglu or cube doors open for that reason. I tried it but mine started squarking for breakfast a 5 - 5.30ish. See how you feel when you are not so tired. Try them with the door closed tonight and a blanket or something over the run. Hope you feel better soon, Jan
FORENSICA
If you think that light is the problem have you thought of closing the door and covering the eglu with something dark, it may help to keep them quite a little longer.......... It's been posted on here a few times before so have a search about We have done all of this previously. We had tarpaulin on, we were closing them in the night but to be honest, there was always a day when they just decided to make noises early and I never figgured out why. I also have to stay with lights off when i get up very early, since if they see it, they would also start. This is not fun. I reckon it can be because they just want to go out to the garden. If I had more space, i would build a large run and never let them out anywhere else. Possibly that would keep them happy and not needing to ask for attention. Whole summer I had battles with hubby (who is not happy from being woken up, rightfully so) when they would decide to squark and hoped that winter would be the quiet time. We got double glazing now, which helped tremendously for the cute little noises (which i like) but not with the full blast. This did not happen for a long time, but once in a while is still annoyng. I have decided now that I will give away the noisy one. Maybe she is just unhappy for some reason and I want to give the other two chance, since I like them very much. I wonder if anybody will want her with such history
dancing cloud
Good to hear from you again - how's the thesis coming along? My little monsters get shut in so that any noise they make is contained a bit by the Cube. In summer I still heard them, but the neighbours always said they didn't hear them at all, so I suspect we are probably more sensitive to their noise than non-owners. Maybe see how it goes with the bean rather than trying to make decisions now?
