Is she drinking anything on her own? if not perhaps just get it in her beak & not try the tube thing, bit don't know why it needs to bypass the crop. I do know fluid is important, and you did the right thing taking her back to the vet to get it done, guess not today or tom though! (i think it must be difficult to do) good that she fought you though! if they are real sick they just sit!

Hi Sandy, yes she is drinking loads of water with Avipro in it, and eating too. However the vet says that because of the blockage in her crop nothing is getting into her stomach, hence the tube was needed.

 

He said to leave her over Christmas, unless she rapidly goes down hill, and bring her back after.

 

I checked her crop this morning and it is still huge, and the diarrhoea is awful, just white watery liquid with hardly any brown in it. But she was very perky today, running round the garden, and scratching about and doing chickeny things.

 

I just hope and pray that I get up tomorrow and run my hand over her as I do each morning, and her crop has emptied itself

 

It's good to know that there's a bit of hope 'cos she's got fighting spirit in her, so thanks for that Sandy

would the "live fishing maggots" help do you think,? It is supposed to be good for an impacterd crop, which isn't your problem, but if it is blocked might that not clear it ? I know you have to get the white ones not coloured though can't imagine why. you might find a fishing tackle shop open or find a fisherman along a canal or lake I am sure they would sell you some. Might be worth a try!?

I'm off to the fishing tackle shop this morning, but I doubt if it will be open, if there are some dedicated fishermen out there it may be though!

 

OH is off to Devon this morning to see his mum & dad, but I wanted to stay with my chicken! So no chance of finding anyone fishing as I don't drive

 

Worth a try though with the maggots. Checked her crop this morning and it's still the same although not any bigger. Also the poos look a bit more solid although it may be me clutching at straws as the Auboise sucks up a lot of the moisture. She doesn't seem sick though, she's scratching around and doesn't seem to be going down hill so I live in hope of a miracle.

oh know just what you mean, one thing going when they are all ok, but not knowing one isn't, sent OH away for a week with his daughter, as didn't want to leave the girls, well couldn't really with their living arrangements! worse at the time too! 2 1 and 1!!! hope you managed to get some if not maybe tom? I got a softee girl again! just started laying after few weeks, 2 good followed by 2 soft, they are sooo mis when not right! she kept doing that quiet night night noise, then wanted to get down (ga taken her into warm) poohed a smelly green frothy bit & toddled off to join her friends must go see if she's got rid of all!

I gave her some nurish um, she gobbled a little of that just before, and she had turned her beak up at a little selection plate I had just offerd her. drank some water just before too. I like to think it gave her the energy to push rest out, but it usually works way out.

She's still jogging along thanks, eating a bit, still milky poos but a bit more solid matter in them, so although I'm clutching at straws there is a slight improvement there. Her crop still has a big lump in it about the size of a satsuma, but it hasn't got any bigger.

 

I called the vet this morning and he said to continue giving the septrin mixed in with her food and if she goes down-hill to take her in.

 

Problem is I have to go away over night to Devon to see the MIL (FIL is not well), I have already delayed it by a day and OH is down there already so can't not go I just hope she's OK.

 

Thanks for the advice Laura, (post before Sandy's), I really hope it isn't that 'cos if it is it doesn't sound like there's much hope for her, although the vet did mention a tumour... But the symptoms sound identical to your hen's.

Sorry missed your posts, got back from Devon today.

 

Chelsea you weren't wrong it was really cold, OH's sister's house is freezing! She has no central heating I was so glad to get back home

 

Christian thanks so much for your offer to look after her it was very kind of you.

 

I came hot-footing it back from Devon, all I could think about was how Skye was doing and I know I was taking a big risk leaving her but there was nothing I could do. When we got back she seemed fine I let them out, and for the first time in 3 weeks she was running round the garden, and showing a bit of enthusiasm for the treats bowl

 

However the poos are still very iffy - still white & milky but a fair bit more brown as well. I followed her round the garden looking at her poos, the neighbours must think I'm mad!! Like Sherlock Holmes looking for clues!!

 

Anyway I'm going to feel her crop tomorrow a.m. and if it's still full it's back to the vets for us.

 

But on the whole I'm a bit more optimistic as today she was more like her normal scatty and lovely self.

Have you tried Bokashi bran? I have some if you need any. It might firm her up a bit.

Thanks Christian, yes I do give them Bokashi bran, but it hasn't helped her, the vet is treating her for a bacterial infection as he said that the diarrhoea is due to this or a tumour the blockage in her crop is not letting the food get through to her stomach which could be due to a tumour, although the poos are looking a bit more solid than they did (sorry am poo-obsessed at the moment). So obviously some food is getting through.

 

My other chook Bobbie is fine, so it hasn't spread to her, not yet anyway

This morning her crop was flat as a pancake so I think her body is starting to get back to normal. Still got the milky white diarrhoea though so think there is some underlying problem going on

 

She's well in herself, managed to wrestle a corn on the cob off of Bobbie and took it into the bushes to scoff

 

You are right Trish this is one ride and a half, baptism of fire into chicken keeping OH is not keen to get any more as they take up so much of my time (mainly 'cos I'm always out there gawping at them! ).

 

The plan was if I get thru the winter without any problems we'd get 2 more in the Spring but after this who knows? As long as Skye's OK think it will be just me & my 2 chooks for a while yet...

Hi Sandy, yep giving them yoghurt but not every day and not too much.

 

Her crop's working normally now so whatever she eats is at least getting through, and she's still perky but has the diarrhoea still. She won't touch her pellets, she's really thin so I am trying to build her up! She's having weetabix, vegetables - potatoes and peas, mealworms, things like that.

 

So I don't think she's out of the woods yet but has improved in the last couple of days

Mine adore grated cheese. not too much for her crop though. also sun floer hearts.

a sickly one loved warm ready brek made with water(naturaly) but won't touch it now she is better!0

I suppose you have tried a warm mash made of the pellets. again sickly they seem to like it good & sloppy (BHW told me to mix it up in front of her. that also helped.

course they are all different!

I've seen lots of your posts & not like you not got lots of ideas. trying to think of other things youy may not have tried tickling her pallet with. Mine liked the Bulgar wheat I cooked up for the dogs yesterday. & they like MY porridge, made with water & sultanas, but NOT theres so much if I put THEIR limestone poultry spice etc in it. Crafty devils!!!

Thanks Sandy, I tried porridge oats this aft made with water and a teaspoon of honey, they seemed to like it but it stuck their beaks up, they went round wiping them for ages.

 

I'd made an appointment for the vets for 5 but have cancelled now as she seems a lot better, the poos are still sloppy but there's hardly any of the white milky liquid in them now. And she's just scoffed a plate of cooked new potatoes, crushed, with sweetcorn mixed in! She is a lot more like her old self, running up to me when I go out in the garden.

 

I think I will give it a few more days and see how she goes

yes honey was a good thing, they wipe after plain porridge too.ther is a tubwe of high calorie paste you can buy from pets at home, and other plases too I expect, cost £6 +. you only need a lottle, recommended on another forum.

Useful for in the chook chest for another time maybe

I rushed home from work today, they let us go at 3pm

 

Let them straight out and made them some warm porridge with oats and a spoonful of honey and hid some raisins in it! Bobbie was lapping it up and splashing it about and Skye was vacuuming up the bits that Bobbie had spilt! Then she got her beak stuck in

 

So it's all good, poos are still loose but not so watery and she seems OK. Never thought she'd get through this, especially in this cold, just shows me chooks are stronger than they look, although I'm not counting my chickens yet!!
