Idiot on Radio 4 GQT says hens only need scraps/some grain

Recommended Posts

Towards the end of Radio 4 "Gardeners Question Time" yesterday (repeated Wednesday 31 December), the panel were asked to make recommendations for new things to do in 2009. I was only half listening until one of them suggested keeping chickens. To my dismay, he went on to say that they only need food s"Ooops, word censored!"s from the kitchen and "some grain", and that legally the area of space they each need to live in was about the size of a "small oven".

Quel idiot! I am wondering if the BBC will cut that bit out of the repeat - they must have had complaints - and I haven't yet checked to see if it is still in the on-line version

Although some of us do give the hens food s"Ooops, word censored!"s (properly boiled or rinsed or whatever), I seem to remember reading somewhere that it DEFRA prohibits this. As for "some grain" and the comment about the small space - if he didn't know what he was talking about, he shouldn't have talked about it. Do you think that he was deliberately winding up the audience?

I listened to this on Sunday, although it didn't register with me as a stupid thing to say  Two of the other panel members keep chickens, Anne Swithinbank and Bob Flowerdew so I am surprised that they didn't question what he was saying  I shall try and listen to the repeat on Wednesday pm.
