chelsea
Had to laugh today, we bought a heat lamp today to hang in our walk in run just for the chilly days. It was an immediate success.....we hung it over the dustbath and Ella jumped in straight away, lied on her side, lifted her wing and proceeded to sunbathe under the red glowing rays I will try and get a pic tomorrow so you can see. edit for pics - Edited January 3, 2009 by Guest

Guest
hmmmm not sure whether it's a good idea or not. Won't they be cold in the cube at night as the temperature change will be quite dramatic and how much does it cost to run? would it also encourage them to moult? chelsea
its a 250 watt bulb Poet, its not that hot really. Just takes the chill off. Im not sure how much it would cost to run TBH . Its only been on for a couple of hours this afternoon and I will only use it on the really cold days when the frost doesnt disappear and there's no sun. They cant really notice a temperature change as they have hot water bottles! I bought it for Ella really....(who gets sterile peronitis), I think she gets cold. Also handy if we have any chicks

Guest
chelsea, is it waterproof? Where did you get it from as I think we will get one for Bea she really feels the cold because of her legs and I think this might be a good idea for her. chelsea
not sure if its waterproof Poet... but you have a roof on your run dont you? We got ours from Mole Valley Farmers (not online though as we have a store a few miles away) http://www.molevalleyfarmers.com/pd4_POULTRY_HATCH-EQ_17887_LAMP-UNIT-INFRA-RED+DIMMER.htm It comes with a guard, not sure if the bulb came with it. (we have the red infra red one) We have an outside weatherproof electric socket by the chicken run anyway. Maybe have a look around online....not sure how competetive ours was for price, you might get better elsewhere.
