Dora has no knickers!

Recommended Posts

What a sight to behold it was too  ! I'd let the chooks out to free range around the garden while I was tidying up the conservatory and just happened to notice that Dora was wearing no knickers - you could see everything

Anyway, I brought her inside to check her over and find that she is having the second half of the moult which started and stopped a couple of months ago. She has a baldy bum and has loads of new quills around her head and under her wings. It explains why she stopped laying again I suppose. I'm a bit worried about her in this cold weather with not enough feathers though. Will she be OK? She shares her Eglu with her two sisters who are quite fluffy, so I'm hoping she just gets snuggled up between them. It was minus 5 here last night so I'm a bit worried.

Our Ruby experimented with a Punk look last winter, self infiicted, and seemed to weather it ok but it was a milder winter than this year so far. We made sure she had plenty of warm treats and extras like Poultry Spice. Hopefully Dora will be fine.

4 of our 7 have bald bums at the moment... dont you know feathers are so last year!!!

seriously, 6 of them have bumper bits.. and only root (bottom of the pecking order) has no bumper bit.... maybe she is starting to climb the ranks?????

i dont think it hurts them, just looks a bit funny and they soon re-grow.

my little bullied girl still has bald bum. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=35887. the skin is a better colour though & a few more quills, she also has a bar patch up one patch of her back & on the shoulders. If she os not active she hunches up & tries to fluff up. being so thread bare still you can see clearly what is MEANT to be happening & she sits & shivers. She is also moulting and silly sausage still lays almost daily, unlike her two jail mates who stopped i October. :!: provded your girls friends aren't excluding her & they are nice & fluffy, she should be fine. there are lots of suggestions on ways to keep them warm on a couple of other threads , if you are REALLY worried :|

oh but my girl * her pal have slept inside the house fore a l9ong while now,(for reasons other than the cold!

On any other site you might be worried about what this post might contain!

But I know what you mean - my best layer had a front end moult in October and has now lost her back end feathers. But it is more like that she is down to her fluffy knickers and has lost the top brown layer. Not a sensible time to do it.

Phew! So glad Dora is not the only one flashing her bum to all and sundry! She seems quite happy snuggled up with her sisters and appears warm enough so I'll not worry too much. I hope everyone's girls grow their knickers back soon and have lovely fluffy warm bums again soon. I agree Milly, it's a good job us chook loonies understand!
