Just over two hours.

she was happy to microwave the grain bag that I had, Im sure she will be happy to boil the kettle or run the hot tap (make sure you have a thin towel to go around the hot water bottle). if you can get hold of a grain bag it might be easier to heat.

just tell her that you have a lil bit of a drive and you dont want them to get cold..... mention me if you like I had 2 kiddies with me.

keep an eye out for orsett fruit shop its not far off the turn off, its litrally in there

40w 'normal' light may be OK for an emergency measure, but is no substitute for a proper brooder heat lamp which either has no light or a dull red light. If using a 60w standard bulb I have heard the trick is to put it inside a pottery flower pot so the chicks cannot touch the actual bulb, but can snuggle up to the warm pottery - a terracotta mummy hen.

Do monitor temperatures 1 day old should be at 95f and then reduce by 5f per week - so at 4 weeks you need a temp of 75f, with sufficent space in the brooder that they can go under the heat or move away if they are too hot. The simple test if they are all huddled under the heat source with necks streching up they are too cold, if they spend lots of time in the corners of the brooder away from the heat you need to reduce the temperature (raise heat lamp).

These do not look like battery hens, they look like a load of lovely domestic breeds that were being shipped.

no they dont look like battery hens do they.

The have room to get away from the light and they are not huddled under it either to get heat. Ive raised ducklings from 3 day old with a heat lamp but a friend used a table lamp the type you can bend in the direction you need it in, its pointing to a corner, I dont have room in their accomodation at this stage to put my heat lamp over the top as its an industral one. Im moving them into a bigger accomodation when I know where to put it.

I am a childminder with 6 kids, so I cant put it where I put the ducks.

They are doing fine, like I said not huddled no reaching for heat.

I think the issue is one of light as well as heat - they shouldn't spend 24hrs a day in bright light. DEFRA even require battery hens/broilers to have the lights off at least 30mins a day. The recommendation is they should have day & night, so a white bulb is not a good idea, hence the recommendation in my chick raising book that whilst 60w lights can be used they are best in a terracotta pot so the chicks can snuggle up for heat, but do not get the direct light 24hrs a day.
