Valerie my BH was reading the Hedgehog help web site last night when is came across this request .......

***Good Homes URGENTLY needed For rescued Hen Chicks***

 

The South Essex Wildlife Hospital rescued about 1000 tiny chicks which were survivors from a lorry involved in a crash on 11th December while on their way to the factory. We still have about 200 that need to find good safe homes.

 

They have been saved from a life of misery as battery hens destined to live their whole lives locked up in a cage with a floor space the size of a A4 sheet of paper

Poor little mites, what a shocking way to start your life !

 

I'm too far away really to consider us a viable option, and wouldn't have the space to home them at the moment - now if I had a cube for my big girls to go into, the exbatts could have their house and the chicks could have the big girls house........not sure I could convince DH of the merits somehow, although it seems so simple to me !!

 

I hope the little ones find new homes soon, are you getting some?

Trouble is, they will still need to be in a brooder I would imagine, and not everyone has this kind of equipment to hand.

Just spoke to the lady at the rescue home. They really need help. they are losing a few a day .

 

I am going to go pick up 2 on sunday. i live in berkshire (slough) and am willing to bring back a few extras if anyone wants to pick them up from us sunday afternoon.

 

I dont have space for many more than 2 so please be sure that you can make it if you want them!

Hi Everyone

It is really nice to here that some of you are helping in re homing these chicks.

I spoke to one lady at the centre today informing them that I had copied their advert and it is now on the Omlet site.

She informed me that it was lovely to hear that other people were trying to help.

 

I was asked where I was phoning from and told here Preesall which is near to Blackpool. I was told that she comes home most weekends to Chorley which is near to Preston and about 20 miles away from Preesall.

 

She is also considering joining the Omlet site.

When l had my day old ducks l used a 40 wat light over them which we was told we could do.This worked well as it gave them heat.

Hi I am trying to get hold of them but without any luck, Im now a childminder so getting out during the week is a pain at the best of time and not wanting to get caught in traffic through dartford.

 

anyone know if they are about Saturdays as i have room for 2 hens

If anyone is thinking of taking any little chicks at this time of year it would be better to use the specialist heat lamps and brooders - we don't want any cooked little chicks

 

What a shame they weren't interested in letting you have some Bron - you would be an ideal person to take some.

They are around all weekend i believe. She told us to just call before we set off so they know to expect us

 

She did admit that she doesnt know much about chickens so if you want some i think you will need to know what you are doing with 4 week old chicks!

Please note...you will need chick crumbs, a chick drinker, or at least a heavy bowl with marbles in it so that they don't drown, a proper brooding lamp and a brooder (home made will do......with a non slip floor) and woodshavings or Aubiose.

 

They will need to stay in the brooder till they are around 8 weeks, probably longer at this time of year, you will need to slowly wean them off the heat and you will need separate accommodation for them till they are around 22 weeks, before you slowly introduce them to the other hens.

 

Chicks create a heck of a lot of dust as they undergo moults. Be prepared for this.

I already have chick feeders and drinkers from when I had the quail. I have had to borrow a brooder unit from a friend.

 

The thinking is that when they are eventually ready to go outside, they will go into the rablu and run which will be in the polytunnel. That way they will still be warm but they will get to roam around. It will be a sort of half way house. Then, when the weather gets warmer, they will go into the eglu with run, converter and extention until 22 weeks or so when they will be ready to mix with the others. During their time in the eglu, the others will be free ranging around them so they will have a good few weeks as an introduction session.

Ive got 4, they had loads left.

I have a pretty good idea, Ive raised duckings from 3 day old I used a heat lamp that time and have had a broody raise and succesfully intergrate her in. I have made a brooder so to speak will post pics, its just a good sized plastic storage box, cut out a large hole in the lid and attach chick wire. 1 halagen lamp min 40 watt bulb (when they move to bigger cage/ tube suitable for heir size and age. They are settling well. oh and the run about on a towle in the evening for 5 mins just to spread their wings (I had the gas fire on for a bit 1st so it wasnt chilly for them.

You can use a 40 wat buld l was told this by some one that new was he was talking about.Its ideal to use a heat lamp but my runner ducks are big and strong and were warm enough you need to use common sence Which im sure we all have.This was done from 3 days old.
