Can a cube sit on the ground?

Recommended Posts

I've done a bit of searching and haven't found anything yet discussing this, although I thought I did see someone saying they'd gotten the cube without the wheel 'rack', but I think they then sat it on something else.

So my question is can the cube sit on the ground like the eglu does, or on a concrete base?

Great debate whether to get a cube or an eglu... I like the size of the cube but it's a bit of a shame that the door handle & egg port are opposite sides... and then I'm thinking of getting the eglu but it just seems so tiny... and I plan on building a permanent run so wouldn't need the run it comes with and on and on and on....

seems like your in the same quandry I was in

I have a walk in already that I use with my eglu, so I have opted to go for the cube, with no wheels or run (you save a fortune that way as well)

Hubby has said (after me annoying him loads) that he will put in on it's on base inside the run, ir was going to go outside, but I have a large walk in so really there is no reason why it cant go inside.

I wouldn't have opted to put in directly on the floor due to my back but others might give you advice about that. Its all new to me and I have been going round in circles!.

I do know I have called my new cube Norman though..(cube green)

Thanks for that. Maybe I'll just think of a name first and worry about the rest later.

All this chicken planning is making me realise how small and badly laid out or garden is (mostly down to previous owners). That's the reason I'd be buying it without wheels and run, the cube on it's own gives me more flexibility when it comes to position... but then maybe the eglu would do after all...

Anyway if anyone else knows if it's okay to put the Cube straight onto the ground let me know. I suppose what I'm worried about is damp, cold etc. seeping up through the bottom, but if it's made of the same stuff as the eglu it should be okay on the ground?

I don't see why it can't go on the ground, I guess the bonus of having it higher is ease of cleaning and opening the door and eggport which is a pain on the Eglu because it is so low.

I know people's chickens sometimes have trouble with the cube ladder so if you can cope with the cube being down low that could be something you don't need to worry about

the Eglu itself can hold four chickens its the size of the standard run which restricts you to two or three - the Eglu is bigger than you think.

Yeah I think you might be right. Will ponder. Along with a vegetable patch and a 'pretty area' for hubby my garden wouldn't allow for more than 3 hens anyway so maybe an eglu sans accoutrements is the way to go...

if you do name it let me know, I am silly enough to care about stuff like that..:lol::lol:

Why don't you arrange to visit someone local to you with an eglu.cube to help you decide?? they look different when your up close ;)

will do!

From a search of the forums it looks like there's only one person in Dublin, Ireland with an eglu. Maybe I will see where they are...

(OH will be very miffed but if I do get one I plan to let people come see mine!, but one step at at time!).

What an

I don't think there is any reason not to have a cube straight on the ground at all. The nest box ventilation slit is flat along the cube base instead of being raised a little like it is in the eglu, which may get damp coming up through it, but that's the only "problem" I can think of .

I'll time my pressure washing with the same time I clear all the aubiose though  It wont take that long to dry under, depending on your base, we have having it slabbed how to ease it being cleaned up etc. They come out everyday normally unless I am on the sofa with my back which I haven't had to do, I've been pretty good and got about and even to work, so I am doing well.

I wouldn't fancy putting the cube on the floor myself, too low, I think they should consider making a little stand for the eglu and a tiny little ladder

Thanks everyone.

I think I'll go ahead with an Eglu. As I said, still have to accomodate pretty garden and vegetable patch so the max number of hens I'd ever be able to have is 3 - as they will be in a run 80% of the time.

All a few months away yet... a friend has a broody hen and is going to give me some hens when the time comes.

Thanks everyone again. I have just this moment ordered a (purple eglu) sans run as we will be building our own. Choosing the colour almost killed me! Should be here by next Wednesday, gives us plenty of time to design a run around it, won't be getting the 'hins' until April or so. Just a shed to knock down and a veg patch to plan!
