millymollymandy
Hi I just need some reasurance my girls are ok. After a horribly windy night where it kept even me awake I went to check on my girls and there was a broken egg in the poo tray and none in the nest box. The were making a racket when i went to let them out of the eglu into the run because of the howling wind. Do you think they could have just knocked the egg and then stood on it or could it be something else? I know someone has probably asked this already but got to go to work and not got time to find it! sandyhas3chucks
I wouldn't worry, the wind MAY have unsettled them, but my ex bats know where the nest box is & now and again did one on the bars,, it maight have been thin shelled & sl;ipped through or got trodden on. If ther is need to worry our experts will soon say, but I don't think so
helenmb
If I have ever found an egg in the poo tray then it has always had some kind of dodgy shell, either very thin or a wobbly one. I think that what happens (but I will stand to be corrected) is that the hen doesn't 'lay' it like a normal egg and passes it more like poo therefore it drops into the tray instead. I'm sure its just a little glitch with one of them that day, but if it does happen again take a good look at it to see if it is a shell-less or thin shelled one as they might need some extra calcium like Limestone Flour to help. Purplemaniacs
Ebony always used to lay her eggs on the bars and if they were small enough they would fall through into the poo tray, she then went broody and found the nestbox , she always lays in there now. Pikey
I wouldn't worry mine have done a few like that and as helenmb says they have always had some kind of dodgy shell.
ruth1
Its happened to me a couple of times in the last few weeks as Gytha has started to lay, she sits in the nestbox for ages then comes out and drops an egg in the run or on the bars( who knows why) thankfully however she leaves them in the nestbox most of the time .
