poachedegg
Basically thinking of getting a puppy . We already have Ruby who is nearly 9, however we have only had her nearly a year. She is a cross, possible JRT/Cavalier ish, she is a quiet dog, who tends to lie about all day and doesn't particularly like being left. I have done some research, but would like to hear from real people who have done it. So any tips? Experience? Or pitfalls? Thanks
Rhapsody
One huge tip- introduce them for the first time somewhere neutral (if the puppy cant go out, someone else's house) and act as if it is a casual meeting, then take them home together. MaggieMcHen
....................also make sure that as much as possible you make it clear by your actions that the 'new' dog is the pack member below the 'old' one. Feed new dog after old one, let old one keep 'prime' sleeping arrangements, toys etc etc. Having a dog or dogs is all about pack hierarchy, you are at the top, let the older dog put the younger in its place - rarely will the older one do any damage to a pup. Only suggestions - but hope they're worth having.
poachedegg
Thanks guys - now having doubts whether Ruby would actually want a younger whipper snapper invading her space - so a bit more thinking to do!
fowlbird
I agree with the advice above, Poached egg, but you can also go here for advice and other people's experiences http://www.dogpages.org.uk/
BeckyBoo
It's so hard isn't it, I would LOVE another cat but I know my mog would hate it so at the minute am resigning myself to just Ferocious Frank. Good luck with the decision making BeckyBoo
poachedegg
Thanks for your replies. We have decided not to get another dog. Whilst the thought of a lovely cute puppy is very enticing - we realise we have to give priority to Ruby. Whilst she is a very placid dog who needs company, she still likes to keep herself to herself. Unfortunately she isn't very well today - she has got a dodgy tummy/runs She is off her food and is looking very sad and sorry for herself in her bed. She had a shampoo and cut the other day and they cut it really short - so because of that and how miserable she looks, she looks like a cruelty case......poor Ruby.
