Hen or Cock?

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I was just wondering if there is any conclusive way of determining whether a chicken is a cockerel or a hen. I have a chicken which I homed a couple of months ago and at the time I got it the bird was not matured. As the weeks have passed the bird has grown to twice the size of my other hens (though it is a Lincolnshire Buff when my others are all rescue birds) and also has some long black tail feathers, a larger comb and bigger wattle! I was looking at the bird today and it suddenly crossed my mind that it might be male!

Any ideas appreciated folks!

I am in the same predicament at the moment....

Can you post a pic?

The reason I think mine's a cockerel are - it struts...and doesnt walk, its very high chested and struts around with its beak in the air, it has big feet. Big legs, tall legs are a sign and also pointy hackle feathers around the neck are a clue also. If its female the hackle feathers are usually round.

Mine is starting to get a flamboyant curling tail also... :(

A picture would be useful. :D

Cockerels have pointy hackle feathers...hens have rounded.

Cockerels have a more upright stance and sturdier, longer legs.

Cockerels develop their wattles and combs much earlier than the hens.....and they are more elaborate too.

When startled, a cockerel is more likely to stand to attention and look alert whereas the hens are more likely to either scatter or crouch, depending on their age.

Cockerels may have the beginnings of spurs on their legs, although hens may develop them too.

Oh darn it, I thought so :(

I live in a residential area and it's not going to go down well! I think I will have to try to find him a new home, even though he is a handsome chap. Anyone want a lovely cockerel?

You could try posting about him on Practical Poultry forum. Good luck.

hate to say it but definitely a boy.....a beauty though!

How old is he?

I'm not sure how old he is for certain adopted him in back in October and were told that it was a female who would probably start to lay in February so I assumed it was about three months old at that point. I've tried to get in touch with the person I homed them for so if I get a more definitive answer I will let you know.
