Phoebe
A nice clean cube. I am amazed at how satisfying it is cleaning out the cube and getting it all fresh smelling, with new "bedding" in the nestbox and red mite powder and bran liberally spinkled. Even though I know the hens will trash it all again by tomorrow, its much more fun than housework !!
Rustyangel
You are so right! I made the most of the sunshine this morning and jet-washed the roosting bars in my hen house and gave everything a good clean-up. Much more fulfilling than being indoors! bigmommasally
does everyone put newspaper in the nesting box to cover the large slit? I put a piece of lino in the bottom of my nest box, another omleteer recommended it in another thread, it works really well.

They loved the bale and a half of fresh Aubiose and were scratching around to their hearts content when I locked them away.
blackgold
I too love to clean out the kennels and eglu. the girls free ranged all day yesterday so there wasnt much mess in the pen but i did it anyway. is nt the weather awful tonight, glad i gave them a thick bed of wood shavings in the kennel, they were rolling around dustbathing before bed..... Barkisland
I've also been out today fettling my cube and run after being away for a few day this week. My neighbour looked after food and water etc., but I didn't ask her to poo pick as well cos' she is really busy with work, kids and dogs, so it was all in a bit of a state when we got home. It looks lovely now though - so much more satisfying than housework
mayflower
Yes, we had a mega clean today in the sunshine as well. We have been using the deep bedding system while it was so frosty to protect their feet in the walk in run. But today, cleared it all out. But Oh NO! the storm tonight is making havoc of our hard work and the shower curtains have been torn from the poles. So out again in the dark..soaked through we managed to secure the curtains with sections of the eglu run. I just love how hens are so interested in what we are doing when we clean their run and house. It's so sweet and lovely to think that they have no fear whatsoever of us. .........Mind you......when they see the red mite and louse powder containers they run away...they ca'nt stand it!!! BeckyBoo
Normally keeping the run on an Eglu dry, I've got one over mine, keeps the bedding from turning into a quagmire BeckyBoo
C&T
I too spent time cleaning out their run and eglu this weekend. After completely raking the Run out, and replacing the hemcore, I then cleaned the Eglu right out, before re-attaching it back to the run. Put fresh Hemcore in the nesting box, and stood back to appreciate all my hard work, before putting the top back on. Within seconds Ginger was in the nesting box, scattering the hemcore to the 4 winds before jumping into the run and doing the same thing!! Little so and so!! She looked so happy doing it to though I didn't have the heart to be annoyed for long, oh but it did look SO nice for those few seconds!! Mazzarina
I gave my a proper clean-out this weekend, and agree that it is so satisfying! I let the girls free-range while I was doing it, and they seemed to enjoy watching all the scrubbing, spraying and rinsing. I also really like the smell of red mite powder (!): it reminds me of old-fashioned talcum powder. When the new straw's in I almost want to curl up in there myself...
