It stops people editing or deleting posts, so there are no misunderstandings. for example: I could type 'That SuperKate has smelly breath and I hate her!' then Kate could come along and say 'Thanks Shona, you're a fat pig and I hate you' then I could wait till Kate was offline then change my message to read 'That SuperKate is FAB!!!!!) making Kate look bad and me look good It stops fights breaking out!
