badgerbluebadger
I don't really know how to put this but Ella is not right. She is sitting all huntched up and is not showing any of her normal behaviours. I have checked her crop last night and it was empty and she is not eating very much today - I have yet to check this for real with a meal worm test. Sam fine running about like a loon. Neither girl has been wormed as yet by me - they show no signs of the horid things. I was going to do this later in the week as I had a few days off work coming up. Ella didn't lay yesterday - but she doesn't lay everyday. She is not her bright bold self and I am new to this chicken game and don't what to do! I really don't want to lose my little Ella. Please help me.
Groovychook
Oh gosh, I haven't got enough experience to give you firm advice but just wanted to say that I've had my girls since the beginning of October and had seen no signs of worms. Wasn't sure whether I should treat them or not but had seen that other omleteers do theirs every 3 months. Decided this week, to press on with a course anyway and whilst emptying their poo trays, half way through the course, found evidence of worms. Just thought I'd pass on that just because you can't see any signs of worms, it doesn't mean they haven't got them. Sorry not to be any more help to you... hope someone will give you some good advice soon...
badgerbluebadger
I am going to give the girls a a clean out and have a look around further - god please let her perk up
Guest
not sure what could be wrong but if she's not eating and drinking then she needs to see a vet, she could have an infection and that's not something you can treat yourself. good luck but get her to a vet. badgerbluebadger
No worms - trying to get a vet to see her - god she is just sitting down in the garden not moving - has only eaten a few meal worms. Waiting for vets to call me back to see if we can see a person who know how to treat chickens. Checked her crop nothing seems to be trapped in it. checked her vent nothing seems to be trapped either. she also seems very light when I pick her up. Ideas for now??? should I bring her in or leave her in the run under the sun? Edited January 31, 2009 by Guest
Guest
if you bring her in you might be able to persuade her to eat something, try something soft maybe like grapes or mashed potato?

badgerbluebadger
Sadly I was right and the vet agreed with me and dianosed peritonitis. The vet put her to sleep and she is at peace now. I have given Sam lots of treats tonight as she will be on her own for the first time. I just hope Sam will be ok. Thank you all for your kind words of support but Ella was a so sick and at least she is now free of any pain. Sleep well my lovely. Daphne
I'm sorry to hear this, but you've done the right thing for your girl, although I know how upsetting it is, because EP is unfortunately just not fixable. But do take comfort from her life and the care you gave her when she needed it. Best wishes, Daph
