Anyone working today?

Recommended Posts

I went to work and had an awful day.

As I work for an airline dealing with affected passengers we were rushed off our feet all day as nearly all the aiports were closed, and even when they re-opened there was a huge backlog.

On the whole the public were understanding and we didnt get much flack. :)

I am not going to attempt the journey in the morning if it gets worse though, I have to commute 40 miles to work and am not doing it in heavy snow. :notalk:

Going in wasn't too bad this morning- we had some snow but not too bad. Coming home!!!!!!2 hours!! my route was chaos and I left at 4.30 because I couldn't find DS at school :x . Chaotic trying to get into my little hamlet and pretty impressed with my driving. Not looking forward to tomorrow as my school never closes :(

Been outside to look at the girls - OMG 5 inches at least, but they seem content and all tucked up :)

Well I made it in to work, the gritters HAD NOT been out  and we had over a foot of snow in places (I had 9 inches in my back garden! ) It was quite a hairy journey, but most of the vehicles abandoned by the roadside were there by user error, braking, accelerating, you really don't want to be doing ANY of those on sheet ice, which is what the A322 was ALL the way in to Guildford! And surprise surprise the majority of our jobs were complaints about kids snowballing passers-by or passing cars, why can't the "yoof" of today have a friendly snow ball fight with each other, build a snow man then go in for hot chocolate and biscuits :?

Anyway, the journey back was better but apparently it's going to freeze tonight so it will be even MORE hairy tomorrow - all the kids are off again tomorrow as apparently the teachers can't get in (well, my Mum made it from Addlestone to here and I made it to Guildford, mind you I'd have taken a day off if Mum hadn't insisted on coming over :lol: )

Drive carefully everyone

They should be a lot more decisive with school closures - Surrey already announced all schools will be closed tomorrow but our school website says "we hope to be open as normal" This morning was a stuff up - EVERY primary was closed, EVERY secondary was closed and somehow they still thought opening was a good idea.

Staff, parents EVERYONE appreciates an early decision - it's dangerous being on the roads and it's the staff who have to do it. Its a nightmare teaching kids when the weather is like this too - imagine what teenagers are like! If the primaries are closing the parents already have the maximum inconvenience. Yes there will be complaintes but I bet there were more about the kids getting there and being sent home than they would have got if they announced closure at 7am. This school seems to be proud that "we don't close" but they did and caused a LOT of trouble with it.

Couldn't agree more Pengy.

I just spent a day in secondary with a disrupted start to the day then supposedly normal lessons. All local primaries were shut - understandably the secondary pupils weren't impressed and we took the results of that.

Add to that parents phoning their sons and daughters on mobile phones telling them to come home NOW - putting the teenager in a difficult position, as to go home would be truancy (parentally condoned) while school remains open. Not a nice message to have to deliver!

I've worked there 13 years and not once had a day when school closed due to bad weather. Getting home will have been a nightmare for many staff and tomorrow we do it all over again. My DSs school will almost certainly be closed as staff will not be able to get in safely, but ours never closes and I will have to struggle in over 20 miles to get there.

Add to that a ban on snowball fights and 1800 excited teenagers. Enforcing that one was simple.... :liar::wall:
