Broadband and wi-fi, which to choose?

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this has been posted about recently, but I can't do a search at the moment!

I am on Virgin broadband, it's ok but rather slow sometimes although that might just be my computer. However the only working phone socket in the house is in the kitchen, so I have a modem cable running out of the spare room, down the stairs, behind the hob and into the socket, and yes, it has been 'cooked' a couple of times! I think it's time I moved to wi-fi, especially as I would like to get a laptop later this year.

A colleague has suggested the BT Hub as it's really easy to set up and has a good connection. I've looked and the price is favourable compared to Virgin. I assume it would mean changing my email address, and although I hardly ever use the Virgin one and use hotmail instead, a lot of websites are registered to that address. On the other hand, the Hub looks really straightforward and it offers security etc.

Is this the best solution? Would it be better to buy a wi-fi modem/router thingy and just stick with my current broadband provider, and if so which one should I buy ... as you can tell I am not really a techie, all I want to do is be able to get rid of the modem cable, and run a laptop from the garden in future! I am very confused, the BT one looks like an easy answer but are they taking advantage of techno-numpties like me?

Fred, are you out there?

Ah, now that's something I hadn't considered.

The most annoying thing about my current cordless phones is the dire choice of ringtones!

The handset only comes with the most expensive BT option I think - or can you buy handsets as extras anyway?

I can see I need to do some more research. Thanks Fred! (You should really start a consultancy).

why not give virgin a ring..say you are going to leave them for BT as you like their wireless set up, and see if they can offer you anything similar....

If they are like mobile phone companies...they will...

my sister did something similar...and after I went round again to set it up for her...she's very happy...

she has some kind of mini wireless virgin thing (sorry its ages since I set it up)....

but it saves major hassle changing providers...

Our sky+ box has broken ( ) and OH has just phoned Virgin (we have their phone and Broadband already) to get their telly service as I just hung up on a really unhelpful person at Sky.

The guy at Virgin was really helpful and reviewed our whole package. We downgraded the phone as we weren't using the minutes and upgraded the BB as we work from home and like u sometime find it runs a little slow, cos we took out a bigger BB we get wireless router FREE :D

We took the biggest TV package with an extra box (OH watches only sport so I go upstairs and watch anything else and the GOOD news is we will be paying less a month than our existing Virgin and Sky bill combined :D

ALSO they have a deal on at the mo where you get a couple of months initially cheper! :D

Have a look at their website and see what you think.
