geester
Hello all One of my chickens starting limping yesterday...she is 3 1/2 years old and is generally well. Neither of my chickens seem to like oyster grit and we've not really been giving them much lately. I've bought some chicken grit, but haven't given it to her yet. She is holding foot up and does try to walk, but limps quite badly on it when she does. She is eating well and seems well otherwise. I've surfed these boards re limping and have done the following: Shut her in the eglu run to rest Given her arnica pillules x 2 so far today Given her poultry spice x 1/4 teaspoon Given her limestone flour x teaspoon Given her oyster grit (although she won't eat it!) Checked her legs for bumblefoot and scaley leg mites - was ok Felt her legs for any deformity or heat or pain on movement - was ok Can anyone think of anything else to check or do at all? Thanks Geester x
Egluntyne
Sounds as if you have got it covered there. I wouldn't bother with the oystershell. Mine turn their noses up at it too. I make sure they have Mixed Poultry grit and good quality layers pellets instead, and limestone flour if I think they need it. Limestone flour, arnica and rest will work wonders. I had a hen that limped for three weeks once. She kamikazied off the Eglu and landed badly, so don't worry if it takes a little while to settle. Ardene5
Hi Everyone Just to let you know we found that Baby our hen who had a broken leg ate lots of oyster shells, she must have known what she needed to do this. But each hen will have different eating habits. Best regards Ian & Valerie
