Is there a list anywhere........

Recommended Posts

That tells you what plants chickens LIKE.

My garden has been totally trashed since we had all the snow and the girlies have almost stripped it bare, grass included. I was thinking of re-doing it all and want to plant lots of chicken friendly plants.

So just wondered if anyone had asked this before and I just cant find it?

Not sure of a list, but most of my plants they seem to like - it's trying to find ones they don't like I am finding a challenge, so I can still have something of a garden left! Anything within reach that is green and leafy, not scented (maybe?), and not woody all seems fair game!

My chooks don't touch penstemons and they seem to stand up to be knocked around. They don't touch hostas either ( I hardly had any slug holes in them last year either :D )

Might I actually be allowed to grow Hostas in my garden this year? I've never even bothered before as we have so many slugs and snails.

I would like to get some shrubs and hardy ground cover plants for my garden. We are building a semi permanant run for the girls as they have, and the bad weather, trashed our garden, and the borders are looking rather sorry for themselves. Any suggestions would be great :D

mine love to munch on any type of bedding plant/patio plant (lobelia being their favourite)

Our garden is very "jungle" and my hens dont touch my ferns, bamboos, palms, cordalines, phormeum (sp!) type plants. Quite good cos all that type of stuff is mostly evergreen all year too. 8)

A year on and my 2 hebes are still untouched, so is the little box - though it's so small it doesn't do much for the garden ! I have one of those shrubs with shiny green leaves with yellow spots, they don't touch that, also a coryopteris ( sp ? ) with blue flowers is still alive. the roses and honeysuckle are left alone, just about EVERYTHING else in the garden has been trashed.

In spring/summer, I go around covering up all the plants I'd like to keep alive, but the chooks have learnt to push off the covers or get under them  I have a bush fuschia that is too tall for them to reach the leaves - no problem, Pepper- the light sussex, hops up onto the lowest branch, her weight brings it down to a reachable height and all the others crowd round and eat their fill !:lol:

Mine don't touch bigger shrubs, but bedding is scoffed in seconds . So far they haven't touched the bulbs either.

I used to have a cottage-type garden, but a lot of those plants are shallow-rooted. so got scratched up if they weren't eaten. Now it's more evergreens and shrubs, and the little monsters do a great job of keeping down any weeds :D
