Egluntyne
I've usually seen an improvement after 48 hours or so. Am glad that you are seeing the vet again. The fact that she is beginning to put up a fight could mean that she is beginning to improve.
Jonny
She hasn't got up today apparently but looks bright and looking round. Don't know if thats good or bad. Bad I'm guessing
Jonny
Managed to get weetabix and medicine down her. She struggled abit. But, she hasn't been up all day and is weaker on her feet. She certainly won't walk. Unless shes better by tomorrow afternoon I imagine the vet will put her to sleep
Ain't Nobody Here
What's the latest, Jonny ?
Jonny
See above! Wondering whether to bring her in as its blowing a gale outside but we've got 2 cats and my wife is 7 months pregnant
Ain't Nobody Here
Oops, sorry . I had it in my head it was Wednesday today . I'll hope for some good news tomorrow . If you put her in a cosy cardboard box with some straw/hemcore she should be fine in the house overnight (your chicken, not your wife ). Jonny
Just a thought - could she be eggbound?
Egluntyne
I'm sure the vet would have spotted it. Is she straining? Article re egg binding **here**
Jonny
Just a thought, she had some of the symptoms. I brought her in last night and expected to find the worst this morning. However she was a lot brighter, could stand up and even pecked at some some straw and some food, not that she really ate anything. Plus she had pooed in the night so she obviously digested something. Now shes in the corner of my lab at work keeping warm and going to the vets this afternoon.

Jonny
Definite improvement, shes drank on her own and pecked at stuff. All down to the Weetabix I think! Hopefully she'll carry on improving.
Ain't Nobody Here
Glad to hear that . Hope she continues to improve .
chelsea
that sounds encouraging, eating & drinking are a good sign. Fingers crossed for a full recovery
Jonny
Shes currently finishing my lunch off and walking round the lab. Even had a couple of clucks off her. Fingers crossed shes going the right way.

Jonny
Dora had a similar day today. At times she was perky and others she was weak and tired. Only to be expected as she has eaten so little I suppose. More weetabix and antibiotics syringed into her. She had a nasty experience outside when I let her out for 5 minutes whilst the others were out. Charlie, the top girl, always picks on her but went absolutely mental. Not sure I'll be able to ever reintroduce them. Charlies quite nasty at the best of times, I may have to rehome her to a friend as she scares my wife anyway. Plum
Glad to hear your girl is brightening up. Naughty Charlie, what a shame to rehome her but she sounds a bit of a demon.
Jonny
Yeah, she can be nasty. Dora much the same again today. Should I be expecting her to get a bit better everyday? Shes still doing a lot of standing around with her eyes closed and occasionally pecks at food but still pretty disinterested. I've tried every food going I think! Or will she take a couple of weeks of being like this until she gets her strength back?
Cazjohn
Hi Jonny, It does take a while and also re-introducing is quite difficult you need to wait until she's really strong, Have you tried feeding her worms or insects just from the garden, or cooked rice, pasta, grapes or tinned tomatoes/sweetcorn My kitchen cupboard has become a chicken medicine cabinet! When does she finish medication?
Jonny
Shes had a peck at all those without really eating any of it. Did come back to find her with banana on her beak so shes had some of that! I think she has about 3 days of medicine left.
Jonny
She's weak this morning. I'm switching from Weetabix now to mushed up layers pellets. Also watery poos, maybe all the Weetabix?
Egluntyne
Could be. Pellets are more nutritious so might be of more benefit. Sorry that she seems to have taken a backward step. I would take her back to the vet on Monday if you can get an appointment.
Jonny
I'll keep feeding her mushed up pellets and finish the antibiotics and see where she is at. I syringe the pellets in twice a day, probably about 20ml at a go. Is that enough do you think?
Egluntyne
Probably. It is more than she would be eating by herself, and might be best not to over do it at the mo. Fingers crossed for her.
