nutterly_uts
where some aracauna, maran, orpington and silkie eggs will be put in I am very excited! (for those of you who remember my M+S eggs, none were fertile on candling)
Egluntyne
I put a mix of Light Sussex and Speckled Sussex eggs in my incubator on Thursday (12th), eight eggs in total. I got them from **Raw Green Cottages**.. Watch this space. Am ridiculously excited. Knowing my luck, none will hatch, or they will all be cockerels. ted
Best of luck to the pair of you. I have only been at it a short time and already dreaming of raising chicks...
craftyhunnypie
Good luck - what will you both do with any cockerels that hatch? Are you able to keep them? I love hatching chicks - but want to try a broody next time. Emma.x

They will be raised for the table, so will enjoy a happy, if short, life. Already adept at despatching, but am going on the Kill, Pluck, Gut and Bone course in Sheffield in April, to learn how to prepare them for eating. nutterly_uts
i've hatched all my chickens bar one. Boys are brought on long enough to be a decent table weight, or until the neighbours complain! Last time my hatch rate of 20 eggs was less then half (6 hatched) and of those i had 2 boys. This time i have 24 eggs going in, and fully expect more boys who are planned for.. I am almost hoping for more boys as my freezer is empty! craftyhunnypie
Oh yes - I forgot you were going on that course. Not something I could do as we don't each chicken in any form. But for people who do, then I suppose at least you know where your meat is from. I just couldn't hatch / bring something into the world, then kill it a bit later. I guess I'd be better off a veggie. I really love my little boys that I've hatched & reared - they are so lovely natured & we don't notice the crows anymore. We have got used to them & I think the neighbours would soon question nowadays if they DIDN'T hear them crow. They all love to hear them. I am known as the lady who has chickens, breeds them & sells eggs & jam. Emma.x
Griffin
I'm jealous and sitting on my hands My big chicks are six weeks old, little chicks are three weeks tomorrow and I haven't got space to hatch anymore until May. It seems like such a long time away Silver Grey Dorkings and Gold Legbars next for me We've eaten chicken once so far this year and that was free range & ridiculously expensive to feed my entire family. We'll not eat any other chicken now and are looking forward to eating our own so I was quite pleased to hatch 4/5 cockerels in the little chicks We've got a long time to wait though.....
