I've just got some (17!) raspberry canes from Freecycle , roughly how far apart do they need to be planted . I'm digging a new bed for them & have heard 8in apart & 15in apart....this is a big difference when you are digging a new bed from scratch !!

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated as always!!

Mine are about 10" apart Sha, the runners come up all over the place so I don't think you have to be too precise. They have fairly shallow roots so a top dressing of good compost will stop them drying out.

According to "The Fruit Expert" Book space between plants should be 1 and a half feet and space between rows is 6ft. I think you start off with one cane looking pretty lonely at that spacing but any day now new growth starts to grow out of the ground around the cane.

 

I think Christian is right though. You could grow a bit closer. If they get too close, you could just cut some of the canes back.

 

Just put in our support posts today. Will start planting tomorrow. Have wanted to grow raspberries for ages. Fingers crossed for both of us.

Would raspberrries grow alright in large pots, I don't have much space to put them in the garden and wondered if that would work? Many thanks

We have just moved a row of healthy canes from an old raspberry bed which we inherited 10 years ago when we got the plot and we have planted ours about 18 inches apart and mulched them with rotted bark chippings which were in the Eglu run last year

We have some growing in a big pot! Seems to work fine... you'd probably get more if you could plant them in the ground, but we got a fair load last year! Go for it!

I love raspberries, my canes seem to have died over winter so I need some more,

Homebase had the last of their fruit canes reduced when we flew in last night...maybe your local one has too.
