sandyhas3chucks
or do they get all gloopy & bung a crop up. AND can they eat too much bokashi?
Olly
Don't know about bokashi, but I wouldn't give dried oats. Anything that will swell up if it's put in water (oats, bread etc) is liable to do that in their crops if they eat some and then drink. Best to soak/cook them first. quickcluck
They can eat too much bokashi so now I only add it to the feeds at a ratio of 5% of the totalish...... I feed mine porridge oat most days, I put it with some food and add warm water for the afternoon mash/porridge, the love it. I also use weetabix which is their fave
fluffyknickers
I have given mine porridge pats and i boiled the kettle and added hot water and hen left it for a while to soften, if I have some i add some bits like sweetcorn or leftover veggies etc. At the moment I have taken to adding boiling water to their normal pellets and then adding to that some extras like garlic, ACV or sprinkling of poultry spice and some grit - they eat it all up even though its just what they normally have! I only give these extras/treats before they go to bed. Michelle
cordelia
oh drat...I've given my girls porridge oats, (dried) scattered in their run a few times now...as a change from corn (to keep them quiet first thing on a morning) I'd better stop....no ill effects thank goodness, but if its not recommended, I'll desist
quickcluck
Why not try chucking some sweetcorn or peas in instead

madchickenlady
I have given mine dry oats, weetabix and the odd slice of bread They all seem fine, and have been known to make a sort of canoe out of left over french stick I don't give them much, and not often, but they have had it. Generally, they prefer toast, wet porridge and mushy weetabix.
Egluntyne
I can't see the problem with giving them the occasional handful of oats so long as there is plenty of water available, and they have access to grit.
The Dogmother
As Egluntine has said, they will either need plenty of water, or for you to soak the oats first. I add them to the porridge that I sometimes make my girls, but they are always soaked first.
Chickaboo
Mine have dried oats as part of their daily feed and have never had any ill effects!
The Dogmother
If they're OK and you're happy, then go ahead, but it's not recommended because they can swell in the crop and cause an impaction, just like bread.
wiblick
some books mention oats as suitable for growers and for summer scratch, but they may mean whole oats rather than rolled. I know someone who feeds pin head oat as a matter of course.
The Dogmother
The nutritional value is relatively low, so they need to be classed as a treat really. If you're happy to feed them, then continue.
