One of my hen's (princess Jasmine) has a very red protruding vent. There was a small amount of blood around the area too which was attracting the bullies in my clutch to peck at her.

 

I have found an egg that had a small speck of blood on it so presume Jasmine laid this.

 

I am new to chicken owning

 

Does their vent go like this straight after laying an egg or could it be due to her struggling to lay this egg? If so why?

 

I have cleaned her area up with warm salty water and sprayed her with violet spray to hopefully deter the others having a go at her.

 

Any thoughts gratefully apprecited.

BTW. I have had Jasmine and three of my other 6 for just over a week now. It is my two older chickens that are the bullies. She shows no other signs of ill health - i.e. she is still eating/drinking and looks generally well.

Im sorry to read one of your girls is being picked on.

 

Like you say it could be that she has struggled to lay an egg and therefore the blood appeared on the egg shell. She could have struggled if she has just started to lay for the first time. Is she a point of lay girl?

 

Her vent shouldnt be red and sore after laying an egg so you will have to check on her regularly to ensure this isnt the case.

 

You have done the right thing by cleaning her up and using purple spray but if your older girls continue to show an interest in pecking her you will need to separate the bullies until she is fully healed

Thank You theherd123. I have a smaller run I can put her in in the morning within their big enclosure. I'll prob put Jasmine in there tomorrow as I have to work so won't be here to check on her regularly.

If the vent is protruding you can try and replace it by placing the flat of your fingers (after washing well) on the vent and pressing very gently but don't force.

Redwing has done it by using sugar first to reduce swelling and there are other threads but I'm afraid I cant remember how it was done.

After it happened with one of my girls it hasn't recurred, thank goodness. Hope this helps

It does sound as though she has had a bit of a prolapse and Plum has given you good advice.

 

Personally, I haven't experienced this with any of my girls but this thread and this one might be helpful.

Thank you for the replies - on closer inspection today (yesterday I couldn't get a proper look as I was holding her whilst hubbie was purple spraying etc) It isn't her vent - it's just below and I think it's where the horrid bullies have been really pecking her. It is alot better today after yesterdays clean up but they still keep having a go at her. I put her in the seperate run but then the weather turned really nasty so I let her back out and put her in one of the straw boxes in the shed where I think she stayed out of halms reach. Bless her she gets out when she hears me coming and then she gets picked on

 

I have smothered the area in vaseline as it looks very sore and 'tight' and I have COVERED it in purple spray. Have I done the right thing?

Rotten bullies. Glad its ok and not a prolapse. It sounds as though you are doing ok, but I don't know how to stop them picking on her.

When it has healed you could rtry some anti peck spray. Ukadex is the best, or even consider putting bumpa bits on the bullies.

Does anyone think Sudocream would help with the healing? I use it on the horses but not sure if it would be OK for Jasmine. I presume it will be as it's what goes on Babies bums

Im not too sure TBH, esp if the skin is broken and sore. I would stick to the vaseline for now and it might help to separate the bullies for a while - the 'time out' from the main flock might help to lower their pecking order.

she sounds to me like she has sterlile peritonitis. Does she appear to have a very red swollen bum (under the vent) thats squashy when you push it? Does she waddle? does she appear swollen/swollen undercarriage?

 

My oldest girl has had sterlile peritonitis for 18 months and has a red protuding bum (under vent), my maran hen is attracted to it and does peck it Ukadex is brilliant for anti pecking, I combine the Ukadex to prevent pecking with purple spray to disguise the blood and its an antiseptic also.

 

If you think she has sterile peritonitis you will have to keep a beedy eye on this bum area.

Hi all. Well they seem to have stopped picking on Jasmine. Her wound has now scabbed over so hopfully she is on the way to recovery.

 

The only one i'm having a problem with is Maude. She really is a bully, in a way I can't blame her, she survived the dog attack and the had to endure the introduction of the new girls however, enough is enough. I think the majority of her attacks are when we are about as she has a right go at all the others thinking they are gonna get to any treats before she can but she is really violent with it.

 

I think that I can get some kind of clip attached to her beak to prevent her pecking others???? Any advise welcome. Thanx

I have fitted 2 bumpa bits today - I got them from ebay and they arrived the next day. They are a bit fiddly to fit on your own but I managed 2 - and they stop any real damage being done though the jumpng and chasing still continues....I gather you can get them from Wernlas if you ring them too

Firstly i'd like to thank everyone for their replies and i thought i'd give you an update on Jasmine.

 

Last thursday I came home to find poor little Jas wedged in the corner of the shed bleeding from her vent and very very distressed. I of course took her out of there immediately and set her up in her own pad on the patio.

 

After a couple of days of cleaning her up and just letting her de-stress I decided the vets was the next call. I was very worried as everyone I had spoken to (friends with chooks and the lady I got the chickens from) had said there's not alot the vets can do and it often results in PTS

 

The young lady vet was absolutely brilliant we were in the surgery for a good 1/2 hour with her weighing Jas to work out correct dossages of the pain killers and anti b's for what turned out to be a very nasty infection.

 

Princess Jasmine is coming on a treat. Her back end has almost completely healed and her vent is well on the way to being back to normal. She is still in her luxury pad (tucked up with a hot water bottle if it's gonna be a cold night and she is let out into the garden when we are there to keep an eye on her. fingers crossed she's gonna make it woo hoo x

 

I have a few questions about bumpa bits but will start that as a new thread in the hope of replies thanx everyone x
