DIY Chicken house

Recommended Posts

Me and OH have been making a chicken house :D . We are SOO proud of ourselves!

It started with a pile of pallet wood.

Comming together eh?

Its going to be sanded, so they don't get splinters in their little feet.

The wood will be painted with a fence paint thats meant to make it last longer.

When its finished, we are going to use feather board (I think thats what its called, the fencing wood thats thinner one one side than the other) to cover it so that it is extra rainproofed and insulated. The roof is going to extend over each edge to help with rainproofing as well.

Its got a gap of about an inch on the back wall, all the way along for ventilation.

What do you think? Any constructive critisism or hints greatfully received :)

Fret not Mostin. The beautiful green Eglu is for the new legbar girls. Its going to be kept at home for use in the garden for new introductions, sick bays etc.

The wooden DIY house is going to live in 'our' field with the Alpacas and it will house some lucky ex-batt ladies who are going to have a whole acre to play in, guarded by their Alpaca friends.

More chicken housing equals more chickens :D:D

Hiya,

I think that looks just the job, so envious of people who can make useful things :)

So envious of you, I really wanted legbars but we went with something more 'standard' (if there is any such thing as a standard chicken). I have promised myself one day I will have a legbar and a burford brown just for those beautiful looking eggs and a different chicken experience.

keep us posted

Naomi

we are going to use feather board
How appropriate!

:lol: I missed that one!

Chickvic; and 3hens2cats; Give it a go! I've only been mucking around with bits of wood since I helped build our walk in run. It just gave me confidence to just try. I've just been looking at pictures, and my current chook house and copying what they are doing.

If you can get some pallet wood, then you aren't wasting money if things go wrong. If it's all hopeless, you can have a good bonfire with the wood and save the ash for your girls dustbath! :D

I'm really enjoying making things with wood. Have a go. Start with something simple. :D
