Making an early morning exhibition of myself

Recommended Posts

Early this morning, probably about 4, there were lots of fox noises coming from close to our garden.

As a good chicken-mummy I was immediately awake. Couldn't see anything from the window so down I went and was then to be seen out in my garden in my big (but short) riding jacket, pull on winter riding boots and not much else.

My only thought was whether my girls were safe -I didn't see the foxes but I must have scared them off as I didn't hear them again.

Now I'm waiting to see if I get any funny looks from any of my neighbours who may have seen my early morning expedition.

My neighbours often comment that they've seen me at 6am in the morning trundling up the end of the garden in my husbands wellies and dressing gown to let the hens out... Its not a pretty site I can tell you! - gosh the things we do for our girls!!!

I also made a spectacle of myself in the garden this morning  Naughty Freya had hopped over the Omlet netting but this time not to the dogs garden but to the bit where I've been growing grass! OH is very protective of our only bit of grass so I had to retrieve her. I noticed the netting sagging a little on one section and thought I'd be able to climb over it. I was wrong, I couldn't, I got my hind leg caught and fell flat on my face in the mud

My neighbours are the nosiest on earth, nothing escapes them, I just pray they weren't looking out the window at that moment because I was wearing a skirt with nothing on underneath!:oops::oops::oops:

I haven't had to scare off any foxes (touches wood madly) but last year Opal woke us up about 4.30am (in the summer) so I made a mad dash down the stairs wearing an old robe and nothing else. In my haste to check on the girls I hadn't done the robe up! I can honestly say it's a good job no-one else was around at that time!:lol:

It runs in our family, the excellent taste in early morning attire - one of my earliest memories is my Nan going out to the chooks in the pouring rain at stupid o'clock to let them out in wellies, dressing gown and duffle coat!

If I manage to put a coat on, it's usually a bright ski jacket.

Oh dear, how easily that is done! I nearly went over on so many occasions when the batties were in a separate run. I usually managed to save myself from the full "splat" scenario, but sometimes had to shriek for assistance either to disentangle my foot or take the pile of bowls etc I was invariably carrying! I usually got the fore foot caught rather than the hind, maybe that's why I never quite landed unceremoniously! And learned to hop for a long while!

I hope you didn't hurt yourself?!

I'm fine thank you. It's weird because until recently I hadn't fallen over since I was a kid yet a few weeks ago I stepped back onto one of the dogs bones in the kitchen and that sent me flying  I grazed my knee quite badly that time  Today I just got muddy hands, arms and knees  Mr Griffin is talking of electrifying the netting so I'll definitely not try leaping over that

Strange isn't it, these things seem to go in phases.

Whenever the children start falling over/knocking into things it's because they've had a growth spurt & don't know who big they are anymore - no such excuse for us though!!

As long as you remember to switch off the battery, you'll be fine with electrified fencing!! Wouldn't want to try climbing over it with the current still attached.....

I keep a "chicken jacket" in the kitchen (along with the "chicken slippers" ). Usually, though, I just glance quickly to see if anyone's walking past the end of the driveway then sneak round the back just in the jimjams  .

balaclava too ......camoflague paint.....or the bright pink thermal socks giving it all away below the dressing gown:lol:
