Bantambabe
One of my banties has now been broody for about 6 weeks - although it did start off as a sulk when we tried to introduce another chicken. The other two have been ignoring her and squeezing up next to her to lay their eggs each day, and I've been removing the eggs asap so she doesn't get too attached to them. But 2 days ago, just as we thought her comb was getting a bit bigger again and she might be coming out of it, the other 2 decided to join her I'm having to physically turf them out of the eglu into the WIR in the morning, and then I'm shutting the door behind them to keep them out all morning - since they aren't laying anyway I don't see that they need to get in. Three very disgruntled banties sitting on the perch in the run. OS suggests chucking them all in a bucket of cold water Are they going to get over this or will we now be eggless for the next 5 weeks? Might be getting chicken pie for dinner
chelsea
some hens are just prone to broodiness. Last year from March to October I could probably count on my hand how many eggs my cochin's laid between them it was so few! One has been broody about 3 weeks and is just coming out of it (semi broody) and I now notice the other one is starting to "sit" a lot - so it wont be long now. They take it in turns! Does my head in.
The Dogmother
I have one hen who is 'thinking about it' and when I went home at lunchtime, another one was loitering in the nest box too! Time to get the broody cage out I think!
alison
I'm quite chuffed with myself, - I got my white sussex out of being broody in 3 days, not bad for a 1st timer I thought! She was a so and so, I separated her and she jumped the Omlet netting 3 times, so I dunked her in a cold bath, closed up the cube all day and the nesting box at night, as she managed to get in there despite a bucket and seed tray! She gave me a egg this morning, but I was worried about the others getting broody too. I am getting on average 42 eggs a week from 7 chooks, made a brilliant pavlova for my darling husband on sunday, now he is putty in my hands...........more hens, fencing off the garden etc!
