4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

I really need to work my ex-batt girls, they are showing no signs but we have had them nearly a year and they have never been wormed *naughty chicken mummy*

 

Have seen the Verm-X feed on omlet but my girls aren't very good at taking new food so not sure they would eat this. Also have seen some people give them flubenvet with their feed but my girls will only eat mash....is this as effective as giving it to them in pellets?

 

Any recommendations as to what you have found successful would be much appreciated!!!

I should think its easier to mix flubenvet (its a powder) into the mash than trying to get it to stick to pellets, so I'd definitely go for that. Other people put a pinch on a grape half (there are lots of posts about quantity per bird). Personally I have tried Verm-X but wouldn't recommend it - my girls still got worms.

I use Verm-X and have done ever since had the girls, not had any problems yet! But until I do I'll keep using it but I know other omleteers swear by Flubenvet.

I know that a lot of people don't put much store by Verm-X. We use flubenvet and notice an immediate increase in egg production afterwards so it clearly does its stuff. I have just started worming them now as I noticed egg production was down and it has been about 4 months since they were last done. I mix it with their feed with no problems. I measure out the amount of feed they get through in a week, take a jug full and add one teaspoon of flubenvet (for 4 chooks) and mix it well and then mix the jug of medicated feed with the week's supply. I then fill up the feeder from the medicated feed supply for a week.

I use Flubenvet, and have no trouble mixing it with the pellets. The manufacturers recommendation is that it is done this way so that each hen gets the correct dose according to its age and weight. , and the dose is absorbed over the course of the day, and not in one hit.

Here is one supplier that offers free P&P. I got mine from wormers.co.uk but I see they only do the 60g pack now, which is comparatively much more expensive than the larger one.

You do get a huge amount of the stuff though, which will last years if you only have a few chickens, so it may be worth getting together with a couple of other new chicken keepers and splitting it.

Thanks ANB - my mum has 4 hens and 6 ducks so we are going to split the quantity - will it be safe to give to the ducks as well as the chickens?

I'm concerned: I looked into the dosage of flubenvet recently, and according to the vet's column in Practical Poultry, the correct dosage is one teaspoon of flubenvet to 9 kilograms of feed.

 

Can anyone here advise on this?

 

P.S. Maybe a level teaspoon is more or less half of that dose? - I've looked on the forum again since I posted, and seen the dose written (Claret?) as 'one teaspoon per 4kg of feed'. Perhaps it doesn't even matter that much, but I guess there's no harm in being careful and I'd be interested to hear?

The Janssen flubenvet i got yesterday contains 6g (2.5% Flubendazole) in a 240g pot....dont know if it comes in any other strength?

 

Different breeds ie Pheasants /Turkeys/partridges need diff amounts BUT

 

Chickens and Geese

120g Flubenvet medicates 100kg of feed..to be given over 7 days

 

12g Flubenvet = 10KG Feed Etc etc over 7 days

 

so it is very minimal havent got to weighing it out but it does appear to be quite strong stuff for probably us domestic keepers??

 

I am not sure how much my 5 hens are eating but will put this into a 1KG of feed to be given in morning over 7 days

 

But it does say that obviously different birds eat diff amounts & recommends putting this in the feed and giving the above dose over the 7 days

Hi no mention of ducks on Janssen packaging and some of them can be quite hefty birds..u could phone them as they are Janssen Animal Health based in Bucks

 

Got to say i never wormed my ducks ever in 4 1/2 years they free ranged every day...and laid without fail and were big and healthy but were out all day going of for long treks!

 

Also keeping the housing run conditions clean should keep worm burden down too..not an expert with birds but i know with horses there has become resistance to wormers due to their over use and they know worm burden can be kept minimal if poos are picked at least twice weekly from their pasture(if not they just reinfect themselves) I think wormers did make some horse owners lazy. Mind u my horses poos are like cow pats! so slight difference!

 

Good luck could let others know what Janssen say in duck section?
