Lice & Using Xeno 200

Recommended Posts

I've just bought some Xeno 200, as horror of horrors, we found lice on one of our girls last week, yuk! We immediately covered them all in Barrier Red Mite powder (as this was what we had available there and then) and planned to use the Xeno 200 when it arrived.

However, after reading the Xeno leaflet, my DH isn't so sure about using it now because it mentioned in the side effects section that a dog had died after being sprayed. I told him that as with most medication, if you read the possible side effects list, you'd never take anything!

Are we being over cautious do you think and has anyone used this and experienced any bad side effects with their girls? I just want rid of the lice as quickly (and safely) as possible!

Thanks for your help.

I have been using Xeno 200 on my chickens for the last year with no ill effects.

The active ingredient is Ivermectin which for some breeds of dogs, particularly Collies, can be harmful.

It is fine for chickens and even humans (it is used as a wormer on humans in third world countries).

I give each chicken 7 sprays on the back of the neck, in two different places so the liquid doesn't get a chance to run off.

As it isn't licenced for use on poultry in this country there is a recommended egg withdrawal period of 7 days. Personally I have never bothered to do this and have eaten the eggs with no ill efffects.

Hope this helps.

Ivermectin is used to treat worms in humans in the third world so I don't stop using the eggs, I just don't sell them.

I have used Ivermectin on my girls many times with no problems whatsoever ( I would never recommend anything that had been problematic anyway) and have found it very efficient stopping a lice infestation in its tracks.
