Tobermory
Please help! We are worried about our chicken Myrtle. We have had her about 7 months and she has been totally healthy up until today. When I got home, I noticed her tail feathers are droopy, she is lethargic, not clucking and just not her usual self. We have given her a quick check over and there is nothing obvious wrong. The vent is clean, her condition is good, eyes bright, comb red, she even laid an egg today. We wondered if she has something stuck in her crop as it is maybe slightly bigger than Mabel's (the other chicken) but other than that we are stumped. We are thinking of atking her to a vet tomorrow - is this necessary? I don't like the idea of her suffering
purplefowler
If in doubt, get it checked. I was the same with my chook who just wasn't right and now she is on antibiotics and is picking up slowly (touch wood!). It will put your mind at ease. Redwing
I would see if her crop goes down as normal overnight, it night be nothing and its very late to get her to a vet tonight. Keep an eye on her and bring her in for the night if she looks really bad and keep her warm offering food and water. If she is no better in the morning a trip to the vet may be a good idea Its been very hot today, do they some shade? I know I wouldn't feel too great wearing a duvet in this heat, could that be why she is sluggish?
Chickvic
She could be laying a softy? Can't think of anything else to suggest, but if she doesn't pick up I would get her to a vet tomorrow.
Tobermory
Thank you for your replies. I don't think she will have been too hot because it's been quite chilly up here this afternoon (we live in the hills). Could well be a soft egg. The other thing I forgot is that she seems quite puffed up when compared to Mabel. She was a bit too docile when we were checking her over for my liking, especially compared to Mabel, who we also looked at for comparison and she flapped and clucked very indignantly! If she's no better tomorrow, we'll be off to the vets.
Egluntyne
Has she been wormed recently?
FoxFighters
My chickens have been like that. A quick trip to the vets for some antibiotics did the trick!!! Don't worry about taking your chickens to the vets. If the vets are nice they won't mind at all, and if they're not they'll be pleased to charge you so it's a win win situ!!!!!! Seriously, it sounds like she needs some antibiotics. Hope she's ok now, I think you must've been to the vets yesterday? It's SO stressful when the Chooks are poorly, silly isn't it!?
