xChicken04x
Hi all, I'm growing most of my crops in large pots this year, but I'm having problems deciding what to do with the compost after harvesting my crops. Some websites tell me to put it in the bin, and get new stuff next year, due to disease risks, others say to put it in a large bag and store it in the shed, ready to use in the spring. I don't have a compost bin to put it in yet, so what do you suggest I do with it? It seems such a waste to just put it in the bin, but I understand that I don't want to be encouraging nasties. Many thanks for your help.
Olly
I reuse mine in the garden, e.g. for raised beds, earthing up spuds or just digging in to improve the soil - I think it's usually fine unless you know you've had an infestation of something, but once it's been used it has probably got fewer nutrients in. chickenanne
I agree with Olly: once it's used it won't have many nutrients in it, and is not sterile enough for sowing seedlings in. So I wouldn't recommend re-using it for pots, containers, seedlings etc. BUT it is still an excellent texture so will really improve the soil structure. Using it as a mulch on flower beds is a good way of using it usefully.
