disinfectant? - going to shops today

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, we've had our girls 3 weeks now so I thought I'd get some disinfectant for this week's clean out today. Is the Johnson's clean and safe bird cage disinfectant ok? I know it's probably not the best choice but it's available at the pet shop down the road so if it'll do the trick its convenient for now (forgot to get some ready for today's clean out, was supposed to get some earlier in the week  )

Blimey, I just use hot water with a squirt of anti-bac fairy liquid and then jet wash the lot!

Don't let my husband hear you say that - he's desperate to get a jet washer :shh::lol::lol:

Is antibac fairy good enough then? That's what we've been using for the weekly wash anyway (I am a bit of a clean freak and do need controlling a bit sometimes!!) just a scrubbing brush for us though!

Any pet disinfectant with a bird on it should be fine. I use the Johnsons one every now and then. Citricidal is good when I do a major clean out. Only really use the disinfectant on the glugs as they manage to get all sorts in there :vom:

Never thought of that - I've just bought some citricidal as two of them have slightly snotty beaks. They never get anything in the glug though, I'm glad, that sounds really unpleasant!!

Oh let him have a jet-wash, Katie....it'll change his life! You wouldn't believe what jobs you can use it for! My husband used it to clear horrid, stained grout off the bathroom tiles once. It worked but the rest of me bathroom was knackered!

If you visit farms and breeders etc, their cleaning methods are pretty basic really. I think what we do is above and beyond the call of duty but like you, I need to know they're clean. I use one of those pan scrubs with the hot soapy water to get the stubborn dirt off and the jet wash just blasts everything else away.

I like to keep cleaning products and chemicals to the absolute bare minimum (save the planet, the girls lungs and all that), hence, I don't go mad with 'specialist' sprays.

I've always just used hot water and a squirt of washing-up liquid (ecover usually), and a few drops of citricidal and teatree oil, if it's laying around the house. Oh, the joys of plastic! I'm not sure if a stronger approach wouldn't be necessary on wooden coops, but on eglus, I find that more than does the trick.

Just washing up liquid, hot water and a brush for us. Then rinse everything down with the hose pipe, before drying (either in the sun or with kitchen towel) and putting back together again.

So far so good....

OH has just bought himself a jetwasher though... He is very excited by it - :eh: - but must remember not to let him use it to clean the bathroom!!
