Al
We got our chickens and Eglu on 1st May 2008 so this afternoon I went outdoors for a bit of celebratory snuggling. However, my mood changed completely at bedtime when my husband went to shut them into the run but Liza was nowhere to be seen We searched literally high and low. Knowing that Liza is a flier (she loves to fly and perch on top of high things) we looked on all the roofs nearby. We looked all around the garden several times and checked the neighbours' gardens too. It was puzzling as we'd had the window which looks out over the chooks' pen open all afternoon. We'd even watched them as we ate a meal just before their bedtime. There were no strange noises or telltale feathers on the ground. After an hour of searching it was properly dark and my husband gave up and went indoors. I'd almost given up hope too but stayed in the garden hoping that I'd hear something to give me clue. I heard something moving in the passage next to our garden...but it turned out to be a cat. Eventually the group of children who had been playing outside in a garden backing onto ours went indoors. All became quiet. I heard a movement near our conifer hedge. I ran over with my torch and looked on the ground. There was nothing. Then I looked up and parted the branches....and who did I find roosting in the hedge? Liza, that's who! We were so relieved to have found her that she didn't even get a scolding. We placed her back in the Eglu with her mates and I took my husband out for a much needed drink! The whole episode taught us the meaning of the saying 'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush'
