I lost Edna this morning :( .

Such a shock, she has not shown any signs of being ill at all, but did seem a bit slow and subdued yesterday evening when I came home from work. She went of to bed, got up this morning (I could still tell that she wasn't right) but half an hour later she just keeled over - I think she might of had some form of fit as I saw her twitching on the run floor but by the time I got out to them she had gone .

Her backside was very, very mucky this morning (it wasn't like that last night) and the aubiose in the nest box was very wet.

Very sad as she was the last of my first Omlet chooks and top hen - with attitude - so now I guess there will be a 'cabinet reshuffle' as the next few in line vie for her position.

I seem to be losing them at an alarming rate at the moment - 2 at the end of last year, and Edna is the 2nd this year - my heart says I must be doing something wrong, though my brain says I'm not (if you know what I mean).

Nicola :(

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Poor little Myrtle didn't know how to go to bed tonight. When they go back in the runs after freeranging I usually put Gertie, Doris and Dora into their run, then Edna, Mildred and Myrtle in theirs and then the Orps in the cube run. It's such a routine that they all walk into their own run without any problems, but Mildred had gone to bed early and without Edna to lead the way (Edna was top chook) Myrtle didn't seem to know where to go and kept trying to go in with the Orps. She seemed really confused.

We had a little funeral in the garden this afternoon. I have a little area where they are being buried with a couple of stone chickens stood over them and chunks of slate with their names written on them. Edna's name was added today :(

Thanks again, Nicola.
