I know there are people on here who are involved with Guide Dogs in one way or another, with puppy walking etc so may know about this already.

 

I feel quite involved with Guide Dogs and having been and done some Work Experience at their training centre, I know how the dogs are trained to sit at kerbsides and wait for the owner to tell it to walk on.

 

Could people have a look at Shared Streets and fill in the form to email your local MP.

This idea is lethal, there is a street like this in central Bristol where countless people have been knocked over as they try to cross and as its in the main party/tourist area you cannot expect everyone to know or understand where the road is - it looks like a pedestrian area Who in their right mind would build road and pavement out of the same stuff and not have a kerb!

Just had a reply from the House Of Commons

 

 

It basically says the concern has been noted, but they have been successful in Europe. Any changes to roads should be safe for all road users.

In principal he is not opposed to 'shared space' streets but the point has been raised and it is important that local authorities consider these issues before introducing such schemes. They, rather that central government, are best placed to know what is appropriate for their areas.

Well spotted Lewis this sounds very dangerous. I can imagine children straying into car areas as well. I'll send the email. I get anxious at airports where those little electric trolleys come along passageways but in a road area its worse.

I can understand not having kerbs in pedestrian areas with no cars, as there would be no danger but not on main roads in the middle of towns.

It's not just dangerous for disabled people, but all road users.

I watched a programme about this a few weeks ago and thought what a crazy idea. I then listened to the man whose idea it was. His theroy was we are told by so many signs what we can and can't do we have 'forgotten' how to be aware and make ourselves safe and are being. By having 'shared spaces' people are more aware of other road users (car drivers and pedestrians) and are then more careful. I can see some logic to his thinking. The amount of times I see people, especially kids crossing the road in front of cars usually a couple of yards away from a crossing I think it is something that could work, but would have to universal. But the question is, would I want it where I live? Hmmm . . .

 

I do remember when I was at school it was drummed into us about the green cross code and that doesn't seem to happen now.
