dame egna
Well, in anticipation of my new chicks arriving in just over a week, I have searched out a large, thick carboard box and lined it with some off cuts of lino so I can clean it easier. What do you advise that I put on the bottom of the box to stop the chicks from slipping? Also, to save me buying feeders and drinkers - any ideas what I can use instead that's shallow enough for them not to drown in or tip over? Jules.
Bottom of box can be lined with J cloths for the first few days, really easy to just chuck them away when dirty. Sawdust would do when they are a few days old, or aubiose. Drinkers- my chicks used little versions of the upright feeders & drinkers which have the red bases. Didn't have any drowning worries. Egluntyne
I used the upturned lids of Branston pickle jars for the feeders and drinkers, with a handful of marbles in the drinker for the first couple of weeks. I used cheap supermarket type 'J'cloths in the same way that Jules did for the first few days.
Phosphorus
I have aubiose in my eglu covered with J cloths as already mentioned. Thanks for the branston lid idea Egluntine - will put marbles in as well - I didn't know if those needed the marbles (I currently have the bottom of an old cooking oil plastic bottle in there that I butchered so that it is 1cm or so high. No chicks yet and haven't heard any cheaping yet either We are on day 20 now So hoping a couple hatch.
Lewis
I used a non slip cloth, only cost a pound or something like that
The Dogmother
I used some of that non-slip webbing that they use under ornaments and on invalids trays - brilliant stuff and washable too.
