Ben
I really can't believe this! Have always let my 3 girls out for a free range time after they'd produced their eggs, Mainwaring would lead the way followed by Wilson and Jones. 5.30pm yesterday Mainwaring went missing and just a bunch of feathers were found. Later on in evening we saw a fox sniffing round the outside of the eglu. Must have been responsible for Mainwaring's disappearance. It will have to be supervised free range time from now on! I'm wondering whether to get another Warren pullet to replace Mainwaring (not that she could be replaced really) or get a Light Sussex. Does anyone know whether a Light Sussex would mix with 28 week old Warrens?
Budgies
Hi Ben, sorry to hear that you've had a fox attack. Unfortunately especially at this time of year when they're feeding cubs, it's a common occurence. I personally don't have experience of introducing newbies, but I think from all I've read that the general consensus is that you will have far more problems introducing one new chicken to two existing ones. The girls you already have will have become very territorial by now. I don't think that mixing breeds matters so much, as long as they are of a similar sort of size. If you introduced a point of lay Sussex to your existing Warrens, they would probably bully her I'm afraid.
