emmamakeup
Had such a fab weekend with our new girls - Hermione, Bob (yes my little girl (age 2) decided to call one of them Bob) and Bernice were brought home from Storrs Poultry mid afternoon on Saturday. They've all settled in really well, put themselves to bed and seem to really enjoy bread and mushrooms. They are currently sat at the end of their run looking at me as if to say - 'more, more'. I believe they are about 15/16 weeks old and so I don't expect them to lay for a while. Edited May 18, 2009 by Guest

craftyhunnypie
Just a tip - don't feed them mushrooms! They are supposedly not good for birds, along with Rhubarb, citrus fruits & Aubergine. Emma.x

emmamakeup
Thank you everyone Olivia really loves the chickens. There doesn't seem to have been any pecking going on amongst the girls. They all get on really well. Saying that I spotted them tugging away at a juicy slug that they'd found and Bob seemed to have been quite the madam. emmamakeup
Hi everyone Well I've seen so many pics on here with people using bark and I thought it might give them something to rummage round in when they are not outside the run. So far they love it. I have to rake the bark to an even level each evening as they mound it up in the middle of the run. Put an old courgette in with them just before lunch and they seem to like. Will take on board the comment about mushrooms. Really need to read up on what/what not to give the girls. Do you have any tips on trying to maintain my garden? When they are out I'm moving the flowering plants and veg in pots outside the garden so the girls can't get to them. The tomato plants - well I've purchased some wire mesh to create a shield. If they're combs are just popping through how long do you think it will be before we see any eggs?
quickcluck
I think it could be a while yet Their combs and wattles will turn a red colour rather than pink, they will also start 'crouching' which means when you put your hand near/over them they stand still and crouch to the floor!!! Then you will get some eggies! The wait is soooo long sometimes but well worth it!
katieadams
However long it takes for them to lay, it will seem like ages!! Just look at mine and Puddleduck's posts we were both going nuts waiting!! Lovely chickens, and beautiful daughter, love the name bob ! My 3 year old wanted to call one of ours Stuart Little, but when I pointed out it was a girl she said 'ok then, Mrs Little'
