New Chicks! (with photo!)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I wanted you to meet the new girls! They came from a breeder in Dorset and picked them up while I was down there this week.

I have 3 little Pekins (Millefleur, Mottled and a Blue) and a Partridge Silkie.

They are about 8 weeks old- and are all girls- however im a little suspicious of the Mottled Pekins comb- can any one help me here give a positive answer? Its a long way to go to take her/him back!

Because they are still young they are staying inside at night for the next weeks or so before going out permanently- and intergrated hopefully with the rest of the girls later in the summer.

Without further ado here are the girls! Naming is still under hot debate in my house!

Let me know what you think about the Mottled Pekins comb!

Hi Owen.. congratulations! they are lovely :D

Personally I wouldn't be worried about the mottled.. my pekin boy had a bigger comb than yours at only 3/4 weeks and very big and bright red with red wattles by 8 weeks.. much bigger and more obvious than this one so would be surprised if its a boy.

Awwww, they are so so lovely :D Lucky you!

I love the look of silkies, would really love one, but am thinking we should stick to very easy novice breeds to start with - maybe in a few months/years :D Not even got my eglu yet though, so must stop looking...

Hey guys!

Thanks for your messages- Lou that is very reassuring thank you!- ive really got my fingers crosses about them all being girls!

The guy did say he had sexed them as best he could and even offered if any turned out to be boys to replace them- which is a really nice thing to do for a small time breeder.

Karen- Silkies are very easy to look after as long as you can keep them dry in wet weather, and my Silkie Flo is actually the best layer I have! (But thats not saying much I chose some of the most broody breeds!)- but im sure your hens will be beautiful!

The Pekin chicks seem to be little night owls - really should be asleep but are wandering around the tank exploring and feeding! However the little Silkie is flat out on the heat mat fast asleep! Its been a long day today for them (and me!) :)

The chicks are in a large fish tank- there is a reptile heat mat on thermostat under one end for warmth, they will be in here over night and out in a rabbit hutch and run during the day.

I thought it was something reptiley.

Spotted the lizards(?) on your blog.
