My first Hatch is getting closer, sunday 7th June update

Recommended Posts

A torch will be fine.

A mini-maglite will be best it you have one of those, some people put the egg on the end of a cardboard tube and put the tube ontop of a lamp and that works :D

Good luck, if you've got someone, spare take some photos

I bought a small torch while in stratford upon avon today. I've just candled my eggs. The fisrt one was my own pekin egg which was infertile :( but I'm not suprised. It makes living arangements and hatch date a little easier.

So I only have the eggs which I collected from Chris Greenwood. First I checked the two silver grey Dorkin's. They both had air sac, viens and movement  . Then I checked the plymouthrock (barred) and this was the same  , then finally the cream legbar, and yes this was the same, whoooooooooooo hoooooooooooooooo :dance: .

It was amazing seeing these little lives in those eggs.

So I have one hatch date now which is the Sunday 7th June, 1 week today.

My broody is in a large box in a dog crate in the house that i've been poo picking. It appears clean but would it be advisable to put her in a fresh box with fresh bedding two days before hatch date ? Also there is poo on some of the eggs. shall i wipe them or leave well alone ?

I'd be happy with two girls. That was my aim. But my husband really wants 1 more cockerel. I just don't want to decide who will stay and who will go. I will let him chose.

At least with the pekin eggs, I can try again as they are my chickens. Maybe next year

Leave well alone. You should not wash or even damp-wipe the eggs at any stage. Doing so could cause bacteria to enter through the pours in the egg shell.

Hope it goes well at the weekend - we looked after a selection of chicks and hatching eggs last week while the owners were on half-term holiday - it was a great experience.

We had our first chick hatch today and you are going to be completely amazed by the experience.

Good luck and please dont do what I did and drop you camera and break it three days before they hatch :wall: We want photos.

Thank you. That reminds me to fully charge up the camera battery. I'm going to alton towers this thursday so I better not loose my camera on one of the rides.
