help - my chickens have got really noisy!

Recommended Posts

Hi people :)

My pepperpots used to squawk for about 2 mins when they laid around 830am each morning. We now leave the eglu open at night so they can come out into the run when they want to and they are squawking very loudly for around ten minutes each reaalllllllly early each morning. its getting earlier and eariler and this morning it started at 645am and woke us all up (and prob the neighbours!)

Is this beacuse of the sun coming up earlier? We tried shutting them in again but it makes no difference :(

any suggestions on how to shush them up a bit?

Thanks!!!!!

Do they have plenty of food and water in the mornings?

Are they just as noisy if you shut them in the eglu and let them out a bit later?

Mine used to do that so I have shut them in the eglu at night, letting them out at about 8:00 and letting them go straight into the garden for a bit of free ranging.

Don't worry about the neighbours, I was worried about mine but they never complained to me about the noise  One even said she liked the sound of them as it was a nice wakeup call

I have to shut mine in at night now otherwise they declare very loudly at about 4am that they are up and about. I used to let them get up when they like but 3.30 to 4 is beyond a joke,

.

By about August I leave then door open again. They do not like being put to bed at night though as I am fairly early to my bed and fro them 10pm seems too early!

Thanks so much for replying. So thank you. i'll try shutting them in again and letting them out when we get up. also just realised that their food was a bit low so could be that too, as you suggested. back to trial and error then! anything's gotta be better than them waking up at 615am!!

cheers and thanks so much. glad its not just my girls that do this!

mine have become amazingly vocal too...

I get up at six to let them out, and have to give them greens, and corn scattered about to keep them busy and quiet....

the other week, Henrietta became broody...and what a row she made....fortunately a cold weather snap, sorted her out and she laid again after 4 days......

my girls are noisy...and its a daily battle :-D, but I do love them, and fortunatley the jackdaws are making a lovely row each morning, and two neighbours have dogs which bark, so if they complain....I have a comeback...

:-D

Cover or shade their house against the early morning light and keep them shut in the house until a sensible time that suits you (within reason!).

They will adjust to that, and if you're consistent (say always let them out at 7.30), it will hopefully stop them calling to be let out!!

As with many of these things, it might get a bit worse before it gets better, but they'll soon learn! Good luck!
