Incubating Shop Eggs

Recommended Posts

I was discussing chooks with some friends the other day (as you do!) and one of my friends told me that her sister bought eggs from Waitrose and put them in an incubator to hatch them out.

I couldn't see this as a possibilty but does anyone know if I am being a bit harsh when I said that I didn't believe that that could happen!?

Really :?:

I thought eggs were weeks old before being shipped to shops?

and that its pretty much impossible for eggs to hatch after they havent been incubated for a week.

Hmmm....goes to have a look in the fridge lol

It has been done, more likely in free-range as Snowy said, and in the more unusual breeds and ducks.

There was a little girl who bought some duck eggs from Waitrose, and got a duckling, and a boy who copied her and did the same with a chick.

I know people have also done it with quails eggs aswell. :D

Someone (I think on P.P.) tried it out with different brands and shops but it wasn't very successful :? . We were going to try it at school but then thought against it .

We pass the Stonebridge City Farm if we walk into town and often pop in to see how the animals are doing.

They let their hens roam all over the farm and have a mish mash of all breeds. Last week they had a hen with chicks in a run of her own.

I'm sure if you bought half a dozen fresh eggs from the farm shop and popped them under a broody you're likely to have a chick or two. Bit of a gamble though as not only do you run the risk of not knowing if a boy or girl with hatch, but goodness knows what sort of chooks they will grow into.
