Curses! I've got a mole down at the allotment...any advice?

Recommended Posts

We tried the sonic thing & although the instructions said the moles wouldn't come within 6ft, there was more activity WITHIN 6ft then outside!!! Needless to say it went back & refunds were received....we've also tried the Mole Man and his "Ooops, word censored!"nic worms ('til they were made illegal I think!).....and the exhaust pipe fumes piped into the hole.....and a spade used to whack the little creature when it started to bundle a mole hill into the middle of the lawn....and a shotgun (DH not me, I don't have the patience!!)...but the best method we found was one of those huge thumping ground leveller machines, the glass rattled in the windows though so not to everyone's taste  !!!

DH was quite determined to rid the garden of the little blighters as (pre-chooks) the lawn was his pride & joy...he's now going to let the front lawn go more "natural" as there's plans for bees & most of the weeds we get in the lawn flower & bees like them - hurray :dance: !

I've heard moth balls are a deterrent but then that may be a rural myth :liar:

I remember one idyllic sunday afternoon we were at a barbecue at my Ma and Pa in laws just after I married. My mother in law is a lovely lady but quite formidable at the same time. She brought up eight children after all!

A mole hill suddenly appeared in the vegetable patch. Whereupon she strode over and speared the poor thing on a garden fork :shock:

I was mortified and my poor mother, who was up to then enjoying meeting her new in-laws, nearly fainted.

I must note never to cross my Ma-in-Law

I confess, I felt a bit like your Ma-in-Law when I saw my beautiful patch of baby beetroot ruined by the mole hill! When I lived in the States, I knew very old grandads who used to sit in their rocking chairs...with shotguns (or maybe air rifles - it was a long time ago  ). They'd wait until they saw molehills appearing in the lawn and .....kapow!

Not into guns, myself - will have a go with mothballs, then perhaps a trap.

Thanks for your replies, everyone.

 regards Ma in law.

Im having a bit of bother with moles at the mo too. Never been troubled before really, just the odd one in the flower bed but they have started to pop up on the edge of the lawn. I asked someones advice regards what to do and he said dig down a bit and find the hole. Put a hose down it and fill with water or even more effective a hose attatched to the exhaust of the car

I havent followed either of those methods yet.

I stuck a big stick down one of the holes but there was a mountain of soil around it this morning. Not sure what I hoped to acheive by doing that  perhaps they like big sticks :?

Ummm thats what I thought. Knowing my luck my lawn would turn into a lake with moles doing back stroke in little water wings or something.

Im not sure about the exhaust fume idea. I think I would have to be at my wits end with the little blighters first.

I would also have to do it covertly as my daughter would never forgive me.
