kennel cough, any advice please?... my poor baby's not well

Recommended Posts

Hi, my puppy (well 11mths on 27th) has started sounding very nasal and coughing so took him to the vet yesterday who said it may be kennel cough. he got an antibiotics injection and 6 days of tablets, he is still eating but his cough seems worse than yesterday and he is feeling very sorry for himself. I was told to put albas oil on his bed. Does anyone know of anything else I can try to make him a bit happier?

Keep him as quiet as possible as the more he does the more he will cough. A little honey on a spoon can be quite soothing. There was a really nasty strain of kennel cough around last year that made a lot of dogs very ill unlike the usual kennel cough. Don't be afraid to contact your vet again if you are worried as many dogs last year needed more that the standard kennel cough treatment.

Thank you all for the advice. He was coughing a lot last night but has settled down now and having a nap. I am taking him back to the vet on Monday to check how he is doing. He is such a good dog, if it wasnt for the cough and temperature it would be difficult to know he was ill.

molly had kennel cough when we got her from the RSPCA in April. She had it for about 2 months! She had 2 lots of antibiotics and a cough suppressant.

we also gave her a junior/baby cough medicine (the adult one is TOO strong for dogs) and you don't want an expectorant you need a cough medicine that is 'antitussive'.

It's horrible to listen to and also horrible to watch the dog go thru it so you have my total sympathy! :(

Molly is fine now, I never thought she was going to get over it!
