bellekatz
I have been offered girls form each of the three breeds so far - can't decide between barnevelders and welsummers though - has anyone got either of these breeds? Also - no one has offered me a cream legbar yet.... do I hang out for one or just go with what I can get hold of now.............. decisions, decisions...................... ubereglu
I think it really depends on the space you have for them. I have a Barnevelder, she's lovely and lays very delicate caramel brown eggs, which are quite small. However she's not the easiest bird to handle and Spice will only crouch if you trap her in a corner somewhere so she can't escape. She's lovely looking though! wombatally
My welsumer is the flightiest of all mine, she's bottom of the pecking order so gets bullied a bit. She doesn't crouch (for some odd reason only my hybrids crouch...) so is very hard to catch. My cream Legbar lays lovely eggs daily but she too is flighty and a little madam. I'd go Barnevelder... Not had one (yet!) but next time...
atsw
The Orpington breed is great, but a very big bird, so needs lots of room. One of mine is very tame, the other runs a mile (although has not gone anywhere for the last 18 days, as she's sitting on eggs). Which reminds me of another important point about Orpington's, they go broody quite often !! Andrew
Autumn
I breed Barnevelders and Cream crested Legbars, both are lovely birds, the legbars do tend to be more flighty but I handle them alot and it seems to bring them round. The Barnevelders are lovely looking birds and are more placid. I have two Welsummers but I only acquired them recently so i can't really comment on their personality as yet, although they are supposed to be quite friendly. chelsea
I'd go for the Legbar or the Barnevelder - lovely looking hens. Even though I adore Orpingtons I wouldn't recommend one because of the frustrating broodiness.
*mummy_hen*
I don't have one but must say i love Orp's....they are so gorgeous
meezers
I have a cream legbar - very friendly and inquisitive, can fly well but prefers to stay in her run. An Orpington, friendly enough - prefers you to have food to make it worthwhile coming anywhere near you and a Welsummer- towards the bottom of the pecking order, fairly timid, doesn't crouch and runs as soon as you get near her ( but pretty to look at and nice brown eggs )
