why is it that if you want to buy tickets with a credit or debit card they always stick on a booking fee???

That's how they pay the booking office staff and postage costs.

what i thought was going to cost £33 has now gone up to £35.

I work for an airline and they charge high credit and debit card fees.

 

my employer says "its to keep the fares down" (therefore to entice the purchaser)

and to pay the ever increasing bank charges they levy on them

When every a company accept payment by credit card they pay the credit card company a percentage of the price, this percentage is negotiated and is based on how much the company is likely to take via credit card. I'm not saying it is the reason but I do sometimes wonder if some companies are trying to get that percentage back, their admin costs for accepting and dealing with credit card payment should be no more than accepting payment by cheque etc, which rarely costs an extra fee . I agree though whatever the case they could tell you at the start what the cost really is.

But are they not allowed to claim it back as some sort of business cost or tax deduction?

 

I recently bought my tax disc online and DVLA charge for credit cards, so I had to use my debit card.

Last time I worked in a shop was a long time ago but we couldn't claim it back then. The idea was that we made so many more sales because we took credit cards that it was worth while.
