Babs has a baby!

The latest update from Babs's babes -

Basil, who's been crowing for the last few weeks, is still with us. We have discovered the delights of the cockerel box! Well, actually it's a cat carrier (£7 from Tesco). Every night after they've gone to bed in the cube we hoik him out and put him in the box in the garage. He (and we) sleep soundly until 7-ish when the big girls shout to be let out and we bring him out too.

you see he's absolutely adored by all of us, so we'll keep him as long as we can. With this in mind we've been trying to ensure he doesn't get too feisty (training a la mostin 'the chook whisperer' and Bill). It started out with hellymisscloud and the Lurker squashing him when he tries to show off and that developed into carrying him around quite a lot to get him used to lots of contact (and cuddles). well, that developed too....

hellymisscloud taught Basil (and his Araucana 'sister' Hebe) tricks

When she clicks her fingers they jump up onto her forearm and perch!

What has been interesting too is that the rest of this hatch behave very differently despite receving the same amount of attention, cuddles and treats: our marsh daisy cockerel is timid and quite 'young'; the silkie is daft and keeps getting lost in his/her own run; the Scots Grey is quite flighty (altho she jumps up to perch on forearms too but only when Hebe and Basil are already up there); and the Scots Dumpy is a big 'fearty' and quite grumpy. Basil and Hebe are really quite smart (for chooks) - is this common for Araucanas, i wonder? I have read (on the 'cough' other forum ) that araucanas do get noisy - and quite early!
