Removing a noisy girl..workable?

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I know we all have our noisy girls from time to time and mine are no different.. however my beautiful bluebell has been causing neighbour problems for the few weeks and I've tried everything from shutting door to covering cube to feeding up at night and filling tummies late at night and having 'new' hanging food for morning to reduce the noise during the very early hours.. The neighbours have all been very tolerant and all enjoy visiting my girls regularly but my closest neighbour has two young children so the current level of noise is impossible for them.

All the solutions above have worked for a couple of days and certainly help with the other girls enough to pacify the neighbours.. however the Porsche is really getting the whole street annoyed as insists on shouting about everyother day at around 5.45am whether shut in or out..

So I am toying with making the horrid idea of re homing her which I am very upset to do as not only is she my favorite 'big' girl and a best layer but can't help thinking even if I move her will another just move up the pecking line and take over the dawn chorus..

(Of course this is presuming anyone would want such a noisy rebel!)

Does anyone have any experience of this and whether this has cured the problem or its just carried on with another girl?

I'm at my wits end as she is one of my four originals and it breaks my heart to be considering this at all but I cannot move house at the moment so not sure what else to try.. also very concerned about the affect this would have on her and the others..

Any opinon welcome as really stressed about it right now.

These are various devices around to stop barking dogs. 1 method is the use of ultrasonic devices which emit an ultrasonic noise that interupts the barking. I have to say that they dont work very well in dogs at all...but...I did get sent one to trial and as usual I tried it out on Scally my dog who barks at tthe front door. It made no difference to her but I wonder and it is a huge BUT, if it would have any effect on chickens. It is a very very very long shot but I have it here and if you would like to try it, pm me an give me your details. I did offer it to someone else but it looked like they stopped looking at their thread as they never pm'd me. Don't worry if you don't want to give it a try, as I say it is a really long shot :)

Thats very kind, thank you.. I'd love to give it a try as the only hope I have is to try and break the habit so ready to try anything! I'll pm you in morning if thats ok.

I do also have 3 week old chicks (looking like mainly boys so in for more noise soon no doubt!) though so do you think it would cause them any hearing pain?

I recently rehomed my Bluebelle and her partner in crime due to their noisiness. She's actually a lot happier in her new home, probably due to the fact that she's now second in command there, a position she got nowhere near here due to my other more senior ladies. Having heard how she's behaving in her new home makes me wonder if her noise here was just to get noticed and to make herself feel important. She's been as quiet as a mouse there! Maybe it'll take her a while to find her voice but in all other respects she's doing fine and being nearer the top of the pecking order suits her.

I rehomed Forensica's chicken because she was very noisy, and Forensica lived in quite a built-up area and felt the noise levels were too much. Pipi came in as bottom chicken of five and I have had no noise problems with her, so rehoming can work - however in your position I'd want to try other things first.

I don't know if the sonic thing will work on chickens, as presumably it's set to work on a dog's hearing range - all animals have different ranges which is why the Foxwatch doesn't bother the cat.

Do you think if you tried to alter the pecking order, maybe removing her for a bit as you might with a bullying chicken, that it would help?

Could you black out the hen house until you let them out so she thinks it is still night time? x

Mine are actually not that noisy at all so i think i have been quite lucky! Though the other day I genuinely thought there was a duck in the garden cos I could hear honking and it was one of the chickens. As soon as I went in the garden though she stopped.

Good Luck x

I don't think there will be any issue with you little ones and their hearing. As Olly says it is quite possible that the pitch will not have any impact on the range that chickens have anyway. The device is sitting here gathering dust and if it works great if it doesn't we haven't really lost anything by trying :)
