edharvey17
Hi, hoping someone can help. Our eldest hen who is just over two has been laying softies for a few months - we give her and the younger ones oyster shell plus extra powder for calcium but still no change... She looks at them afterwards like she's not sure what they are!! I did feel sorry for her but not after today when she and her new mate got into the veg patch!!! Ain't Nobody Here
Can't help but do sympathise. I have 3 who are 2 years old and only one is laying proper eggs . I'm worming them in case it's that but may have to accept that they've reached retirement .
Olly
Afraid both my gingernuts did this - got to laying intermittently, then softies and then not laying at all. I think it's just old age, and having laid almost every day for the first year that I had them, it's not surprising that they got worn out! WitchHazel
Delilah, my Blubelle is similar. She lays only intermitently, laid a few softies, and now lays very weird shaped eggs, usually with a very fragile shell and one bit with no shell on. Most days these eggs get crushed in the nest box, either by her or by one of the other girls laying. We've been really lucky that it hasn't resulted in egg eating, and I wish the poor girl would just stop laying altogether. I've told her she doesn't need to lay, she has a home for life even as a retiree, but she just doesn't listen.
