A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Im building my bantam house and wondered how wide a bantam is. Has anyone got a spare bantam and tape measure?! I want to get my perches the right width!
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Anyone? Does no-one measure their bantams of a long winter evening?!
sheik
Depends on the breed! I'm building a fence at the moment and have quite a small sablepoot bantam - I roughly measured her and decided a fence post gap of 9cm would stop her getting through - so she's probably about 10cm wide. Our silkie bantam is about twize the size of her in mass though, not sure about width . /\dam

Patricia W
Mine are squashy - amazing how they can sqeeeeeze into tiny places - when they want to!
ubereglu
I think the rule is you need 1 square foot for medium to heavy breeds and 3/4 square foot for bantams.
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
It's the perch width Ubereglu. I'm doing some Heath Robinson woodwork. There's a lot of room in the house, but the perches need to go on a thingy to fit in the wotsit. Me and saws are turning into a bad combination! Scramble
Wing to wing or head to tail
ubereglu
About an inch wide should be ok-the replacement bars I made my chickens are about 1 and a half inches wide-and they're really good for them as they perch properly on them-rather than the original omlet bars. Redwing
OK in the interests of science I went ot in to the rain, retrieved a tape measure from the shed and measured my widest Pekin Slightly crouching as if she was roosting she is just over 6 inches wide I had to bribe her with mealworms for that
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
GENIUS, Redwing! Bless you! Thank you! It was wing to wing. I think of head to tail as length. Oh the surreality!
Redwing
To be honest I didnt tell OH and FIL where I was going in case they thought I was insane If someone had told me a year ago what I would be doing today I would not have believed them
